The Vista Dilemma - I am stuck in a loop.

Post by aristide1 » Wed Mar 21, 2007 5:41 am

During my initial install I managed to get Vista to decide my copy is not authorized and I must register immediately. Well I can't register because I haven't installed any drivers yet and I can't install any drivers now because I haven't registered yet.

Now what? :?

Try "upgrading" the unauthorized copy -- that should get you in for a short while, I think.

You should be able to call them up and register via the phone.

That's what I will try when I get home, but how will Vista on my PC know? It can't connect to anything.

I posted this over in MS's help forums. 4 hours later still no response.

One guy has a screen that says he has drivers missing, but Vista doesn't say which drivers, and "Next" is greyed out because he needs to update his drivers. Duh.

All hail open source :!:

You don't need to be connected to the net to register via phone. Just call them up and read off some ridiculously long sequence of numbers and letters (IIRC it's like 40 or 50 characters long) on your screen to the tech. They will then read off another ridiculously long sequence of numbers and letters which you enter into the activation wizard on your computer. Then you're good to go.

I've done the activation a few times and it went pretty smooth. The people I talked to had Indian accents, but all recited the activation code slowly and articulately, and in general were pretty friendly and helpful. Don't worry, it should be (relatively) painless. :)

I'm sure that's what I will be told when I get a colonoscopy as well.

Are you planning to OC at all? You must have really low temps, no?

Nah no plans to OC for now, the system is plenty fast for my needs. :)

Anyways, good luck w/activation, hopefully you won't have any problems.

Activation went well. As I said in the "expert" Vista forums this manual Band-Aid addressed the incorrectly functioning technical issue. Think they got the hint?

I moved onto ATI driver issues. :?
