unplugging radeon 9600 pro fan

Post by ddrevolution81 » Tue Jul 20, 2004 8:32 pm

The fan on my powercolor 9600 pro is the loudest fan in my system. Is it safe to just unplug the fan and add a panaflo on the side of the case to cool it?

I dont think so. Maybe you could take the fan off, glue on a heatsink then use the fan you suggested.

ddr: What'd you do? I'm thinking about doing the same to my powercolor 9600 pro.

Maybe if you underclock it and don't play any games, it might be ok.
But for the price of an AC VGA Silencer, I don't think it's worth the risk

It's plenty safe. Just try it unplugged and monitor the temps with your finger. I think you'll see it doesn't get that warm with no fan.. 9600 cards run EXTREMELY cool.

Even my non-pro gets kindof warm and it's HS is slightly larger.
I wish I had one of those laser temp probe things.

My ATI 9600 pro is currently cooled by a Zalman northbridge heatsink, mounted using it's through-the-board spring-loaded arms and some ceramique. I have an 80mm L1A pointed at the GPU heatsink, which is ducted from the front over my HDD. It's connected to a 5v/12v switch - I up the voltage to 12v while doing any 3d work or gaming. So far i've never had a crash or any artifacts, and after a few hours of halo, I can open up the case and put my finger to the heatsink to find that it is pleasantly warm but not at all uncomfortable.

A 9600 pro sucks about 8 watts at idle, 18 watts at full load - this is NOTHING, comparatively speaking.

There's a thread around here called something like "Radeon 9600 - ultimate silent pc card?" with lots of info.
