Do modern GPUs come with internal thermal diodes?

They make noise, too.

Do modern GPUs come with internal thermal diodes?

Post by Watzzz » Tue Nov 30, 2004 3:25 pm

I feel like I am overlooking something here, but I'll ask anyhow:

I was wondering whether modern GPUs contain contain thermal sensors that can be monitored per software. Many forum members report temperatures, but I yet have to find a useful way to read the graphic card's temperature.

Can anyone please help me out here?

Thanks,
Paul

Yes, most (if not all) of the DirectX 9.0 cards do. You can normally view temps in the control panel that gets installed with the drivers.

Which ones I'm not sure, but I expect someone else can enlighten you!

I wouldn't be that broad.

For Ati, the 9---XT and X--- models do. For Nvidia I'm not as sure.

(well, that's half an answer at least)

My 5900XT (from Leadtek) has one.

Not completely all-encompassing list:

Cards that do:

ATi VPUs:
Radeon 9600XT AGP
Radeon 9800XT AGP
Radeon X700XT PCI-Express
Radeon X800XT AGP
Radeon X800XT PE AGP

nVIDIA GPUs:
GeForceFX 5900 AGP
GeForceFX 5900 Ultra AGP
GeForceFX 5950 AGP
GeForce 6800 AGP/PCI-Express
GeForce 6800GT AGP/PCI-Express
GeForce 6800 Ultra AGP/PCI-Express

Card that don't

ATi VPUs*:
Radeon 9500 AGP
Radeon 9500 Pro AGP
Radeon 9600 AGP
Radeon 9600 Pro AGP
Radeon 9700 AGP
Radeon 9700 Pro AGP
Radeon 9800 AGP
Radeon 9800 Pro AGP

nVIDIA GPUs:
GeForceFX 5200 AGP

Any cards that I didn't list, well, I don't know from personal experience. The list is compiled based upon personal experience with the models listed (GFFX 5200's DX9 performance is anything but acceptable, btw). I only listed DX9-capable cards.

* Certain cards are rumored to be moddable into XTs with working temp. readouts, but I never did such a thing with my 9800 or my 9600.

Well, I am using an ATI X800Pro and until now I could not find any entry in the ATI control panels that displays the GPU temperature. Would I need any different tools?

Thanks,
Paul

I'm not so sure Pro models have VPU temp monitoring. As far as I can tell, only XT models have OverDrive, which is the combination overclocking and thermal monitoring tab in the Control Center. As I said though, there are rumors that certain non-XT cards an be modded so as to enable the OverDrive panel.
