X800 XL Cooling

Post by addyngan » Fri May 06, 2005 7:30 pm

I am pleasantly surprised to learn about the AtiTool. It supports dynamic fan control, which basically means i can set the stock fan to run at 15% speed when i am not playing games, and practically it's nearly inaudible. It's really nice to have the fan only work as hard as it needs to.

So my question is, if i were to switch from the stock fan to the Zalman VF-700 (which i already have), is there a way to hook that fan to the graphics card so i can keep the dynamic control ability? I know the pin is not matching, but is there some converter that can do it? Is that enough power to run the zalman fan off the card?

Attach the VF-700 fan to the small 3-pin header on the card?

Yes, you can buy a 2 pin to 3 pin converter, or you can splice the 3 pin connector that came with the stock HSF onto the Zalman fan leads. The Zalman does not have RPM monitoring, so there is not 3rd wire to connect.

i'm using a msi x800xl, the fan clicks audibly when scaled down to ~30% when i'm not gaming...

i switched to vf700-alcu running 5v, can't hear, and it cools way better than the stock msi copper cooler.

addyngan,

Here's a 2-pin to 3-pin adapter. Not sure if it's the right gender on each end, but maybe that site has more.

m0002a's comment about no speed monitor on the VF-700 fan suggest that dynamic fan control wouldn't work unless it's just a variable voltage. At the risk of making this project more complex, you could replace the VF-700 fan with an 80mm (?) that does have speed sensing.

The VF700 does have rpm-monitoring, at least mine does.

What make of x800XL are you all using? My Club3D doesnt report any temps... I think its because of the bios, but Club3D doesnt offer any bios uppgrades for any of their cards... I have checked and it does have the temperature monitoring chip in place, and the core should have a thermal ddiode, so it has to be software? any ideas?

atitool beta or ati tray tool will have temp monitoring.

OK thanks :D I had the 0.0.23 version or ATItool, but upgrading it did indeed show the temp :) Tray tools also worked, but i like ATItool more. I use it to underclock while idling and overclock when gaming, GPU temperature is reported to be 42c. I have the card at 156/245MHz when idling and 440/540 when gaming, i dont know if this is of any use though, the idle temp is 42c no matter wich profile i load :?: It should use significantly less power underclocked this far so i would think it would be noticeable in idle temps.. oh well, guess not.

I've noticed the same thing - underclocking significantly doesn't appear to reduce temperatures at all, but they're sufficiently low for me.
