Who has passive 6800GT?

Post by gasganet » Mon Oct 03, 2005 9:41 am

Although my Zalman VF700 (@5V) was a BIG improvement over the stock cooler now I would like to try something truly silent.

If any of you has a passive cooler on one of these cards, please post your numbers. From what I have seen it must be possible because I can run my Zalman fanless with the case open if the room is cool.
Thanks.

I've seen 6800LE's run passivly with the TT schooner, though no GT's. I do believe that some people have attemted to run 7800GT's passivly even! No words of their success though..

I'm not sure what you mean by "even" here - as far as I know the 7800GT runs cooler than the 6800GT. My 7800GT runs fine passively, both with the Schooner and the ZM80D-HP, but that doesn't necessarily mean you'll have the same success with a 6800GT. If you're able to run it with a fanless VF700 you should have no problems though.

I'm of the opinion one of these big heatpipe coolers is the best solution no matter how hot your GPU runs. If it runs too hot as is, just mounting a big slow-spinning fan over it should give even better results than the VF700.

there are passive 6800 ultra cards actually.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Nvidia-Geforce-6800 ... dZViewItem

they come in the newer gateway and dell btx based machines.

i've got a btx machine, and i can see how this could actually work if you have a rear fan. there was a review on hardocp.com of one of these machines and they said they never had a problem with it.
