Passively cooled gaming vidcards from Asus
According to VR-Zone, Asus unveiled another passive VGA card, but this time, it's a powerful one. This card is the Asus Extreme N7800GT Silencer, a passive Geforce 7800GT equipped with 256MB DDR3 (1GHz).
The SilentCool Technology is used to passively cool the card. It's the same technology used on the Asus Extreme N6600GT Silencer and the Asus Extreme AX800 Silencer, though this time the cooler is a bit more massive. This technology looks good on paper, but I'm still wondering how effective it really is... That card is not the easiest one to cool with a passive solution!

You would probably need at least some airflow over the heatsinks for it too work. That looks like a pretty big heatpipe there too. I would've expected two smaller heatpipes for better structural support, althought that would've been more difficult to design mechanically. Probably won't work in a fanless or a one fan system (exhaust). Nevertheless . . . *DROOL*
I don't think a 150 mm high Scythe Ninja will fit under that heatsink, most graphics cards are like 110 - 120 mm high. SI-120 would probably work, and you'll have the airflow going in the right direction (vertically). Maybe even that one would be to high (90 + 25 mm), XP-120 is a safe bet though (63 + 25 mm).spiffy102 wrote:Wow... I love the idea of using this and a Ninja in a P180... and getting away with only one 120mm case fan, plus the 120mm fan in an S12.
How do you expect to get any airflow to go through the Asus heatsink when using a Ninja (horizontally)?
How much air goes though the top (vertically)? Not much.
Here's a review of the so much more cool running 6600GT version.
I see what you mean, I wonder if it will fit. You can always remove that Asus sign, but will the end of the moving heatsink (above the GPU) fit or will it touch the case? Maybe you have to make a 5 x 40 mm hole in the case side?Aris wrote:awsome, now mabey i dont have to watercool my upcomming SD11G5 system.
If you plan on trying to fit this thing into a Shuttle SD11G5 I would recommend buying it from somewhere that has a liberal return policy.Aris wrote:awsome, now mabey i dont have to watercool my upcomming SD11G5 system. I hope the premium for this card isnt too much more than other 7800gt's.
although i wish they had done the GPU on the backside of the board thing instead of this option.
Let us know if it fits.
no i dont already have one, but they are available for sale right now. just waiting till next month when i can afford it.

Do people still think that it might not fit with a Ninja even though that heatsink can swivel 90 degrees?
On this picture, it doesn't seem as if the CPU socket is close enough to interfere with the graphics card?

where?
The Asus Extreme N7800GT Silencer looks awesome (if it keeps the card cool enough). Does anyone know where it can be found?
I'm considering that or possibly doing watercooling for the 7800 GT I already have (that is very loud) with this:

(I need to have the PCI slot below my video card free). TTYL,

It's worth noting that if you don't do SLI you can put the video card in EITHER PCIe socket. You don't have to use the one closest to the CPU.davidstone28 wrote:Do people still think that it might not fit with a Ninja even though that heatsink can swivel 90 degrees?

Asus continues to push the passive gaming vidcard envelope, this time with an x1600-based card using their passive heatpipe HS. One of a handful of brands going after this.

Do you know for certain if this is also the case with ASUS A8N-SLI Premium? Anyone?dhanson865 wrote:It's worth noting that if you don't do SLI you can put the video card in EITHER PCIe socket. You don't have to use the one closest to the CPU.
I am wondering whether a passivly cooled VGA card might crash with a Thermaltake Big Typhoon on the A8N-SLI premium. Might be willing to go the extra to the 32 if it helps with the headroom.
Thanks!

wow. is the 1600XT as fast as an x800XT ?MikeC wrote:Asus continues to push the passive gaming vidcard envelope, this time with an x1600-based card using their passive heatpipe HS. One of a handful of brands going after this.
ever since the x300-700 series ati has been making higher model numbers that actually are slower than ones from 2 years prior to their debut.
According to Matbe, Asus should start shipping the Extreme EN7800GT TOP Silent in december. It's an overclocked version of the Extreme EN7800GT Silent, with 420 MHz instead of 400 MHz for the GPU, and 1.24 GHz instead of 1 GHz for the memory. This card should cost around 450 € in Europe.
Hmmm... I wonder what "TOP" means... Let me guess: Thermal Over-Production?

The N7800GT was stable throughout our benchmarking, but just how good is the SilentCool system from ASUS? We did some temperature testing to find out, using the Thermalright XP-90 heatsink and a 92mm Delta 0.6A fan at various speeds.
The temperatures of the N7800GT TOP SILENT are not very bad at all, coming close to the reference cooler while idle. While under load, the temperatures are not bad for a passive heatsink either. The temperature of the N7800GT under load seems directly related to the airflow of the CPU fan. Those with a weak CPU fan can expect to see higher temperatures than those with a CPU fan that has more airflow. However, users of heatsinks that do not have a fan in the usual position over the CPU heatsink (and under the N7800GT's heatsink, in this case) might want to think twice about getting this card, since such a setup would probably mean little airflow over the N7800GT's heatsink and therefore overheating problems. Users with particularly tall CPU heatsinks may also want to avoid this card.

It has a metal bar running along its edge to provide strength.acaurora wrote:That thing looks massive =[ ... I wouldn't be surprised to see a few reports of the video card bending from the weight or stress of the weight pulling the card downwards.

Can't quite tell what the CPU HS is, but it seems to work with the A8N premium pretty well, even with the HS swung 90 degrees around:

It's the Scythe Kamakiri. The card is also compatible with the Scythe Shogun, Tuniq Tower, AeroCool GT-1000, Tuniq Samurai, Asetek VapoChill Micro, Scythe Ninja, Thermaltake Sonic Tower and Thermalright HR-01.davidstone28 wrote:Can't quite tell what the CPU HS is, but it seems to work with the A8N premium pretty well, even with the HS swung 90 degrees around...
According to the review this is not the case. Google's translated version might sound like it, but the German version says "Ausscheiden als passende CPU-Kühler dürften deshalb z.B. Scythe Shogun, Tuniq Tower, AeroCool GT-1000, [...]" which would translate to roughly "This will most likely rule out e.g. Scythe Shogun, Tuniq Tower, AeroCool GT-1000, [...]".davidstone28 wrote:[...] The card is also compatible with the Scythe Shogun, Tuniq Tower, AeroCool GT-1000, Tuniq Samurai, Asetek VapoChill Micro, Scythe Ninja, Thermaltake Sonic Tower and Thermalright HR-01.

Greetings,
Doesn't the top HS on this card pivot? If so, couldn't you position it away from any CPU tower HS?
Imagine if you used two of these for SLi -- how would they both fit if they didn't pivot?
I'm guessing that this card does not obstruct the adjacent PCI slot -- is this correct?
