Why isnt the thermalright v1 a big hit at spcr?
Looks like most threads started in the cool and quiet vga is related to fanless coolers and the zalman vf-700. Was wondering why the TR v1 isnt discussed as much. I am currently thinkin about buying a vf-700, but I see a lot of complaints about the fan and how its still somewhat loud even at 5v.
So to sum it up, would a thermalright v1 with a quiet 80mm nexus be a better alternative than the zalman vf-700?

Well, I believe TR V-1 is a good cooler, aside from the hefty $45 pricetag, which is $15 more than VF-700, and $5 more than what I got my SCHJ-1000 Ninja for.
In theory VM-1 could be better than VF700 because it exhausts air closer to rear fan and with some extra effort one could mount a quiet 80mm fan in pull configuration so that it would pull the air through the fins upwards. In stock configuration I would say they are about even, they use fans with almost identical specs, however V1 pushes air down onto the videocard, ugh....
Anyway, from the reviews I've seen V-1 is a decent cooler, if you want to buy one and price is not an issue, then go for it. If you also not afraid of modding, mount an 80mm fan in pull position.

V1 availibility is also questionable at this moment I agree with JazzJackRabbit about TR's price, and you will add 1 panaflo to the equation then.
I got it to turn upside-down(and consume 3(!) pci slot as the case for rear exhaust&Ninja interference
The vm-101 is popular among us along with 2 zalmans and AC,one thing prevents it contribute a lot is interference possibilities in some combinations of mobo(NB cooler,VGA slot location(s)),CPU cooler&case.stukovx wrote:whoa, just googled the vm-101 and the review dates were in 2004..... why isnt this cooler popular either???

Or how about just ducting it to an exhaust opening? I knew the CPU's airflow path or duct would be in the way, but why not use 1 exhaust duct with both the CPU fan and the VGA fan blowing into it?JazzJackRabbit wrote: In theory VM-1 could be better than VF700 because it exhausts air closer to rear fan and with some extra effort one could mount a quiet 80mm fan in pull configuration so that it would pull the air through the fins upwards.

I just ordered a V1 for myself. They have recently released the V1 Ultra, which according to the couple reviews I've seen somehow manages to work even better.
The biggest issues I see with the V1 is it doesn't vent (vs the silencer series) and it adds a fair bit of depth to the back of the card which can quickly run into inteference with the MB (CPU or even chipset HS).
Of course, it's much thinner on the frontside, saving you a slot.

Oh my, V1 Ultra indeed seems to work quite well:

What I find an interesting bonus is that it's much shorter and doesn't interfere with the chipset fan placement on some motherboards (like the infamous DFI NF4 series).

I hate the chipset issue on my DFI as well. I'm going to hunt down one of those expensive low profile heatpipe chipset coolers though. That should enable me to use practically any VGA cooler.
I'm probably going to try the Thermalright V1 Ultra with an X1900 card, if I break down and buy it (trying to resist the temptation, too high prices). Also, I'd need to make sure first that the cooler and x1900 are compatible (holes, gpu die size and spacing namely).
