They make noise, too.

VF900 incompatible with XFX 7600GT AGP

Post by timmy » Wed Nov 22, 2006 2:35 pm

Just picked up a Zalman VF900 to cool my 7600GT AGP card, but it doesn't fit -- the installation holes on the card are about 2 mm farther apart than the max allowable.

Thought I'd mention this because Zalman doesn't have this card on the incompatible list on their website. I've notified them though.

I guess I'll be looking for other alternatives...

I just assumed it wouldn't fit on 7600 AGP cards since the 6600 AGP series weren't supported (they need colling for the PCI-E -> AGP bridge chip too, which this heatsink won't allow for)

Will the VF700 series coolers fit? I am after one for my parents AGP 6600GT, as they fit that.

I exchanged the VF900 for a VF700, and it does fit -- although it can't clear the RAM heatsinks, so I just didn't use them. I'm running it at 5V, and it's nice and quiet.

I did have a head-slapping moment during the install though. My computer was consistently failing to boot after I installed the VF700 -- no beeps, just a blank screen. I tried a bunch of stuff -- checked all my connections, unattached drives etc, checked the video card for deformation from too much tension, made sure it was seated properly, etc. After about a half-hour I realized that I'd just been forgetting to connect power to the video card. D'oh!
