Anything quieter than a VF900?
Title says it all... I only have one slot free *below* my 7600GT. The slot above the card is occupied, so the HR-03 is ruled out. Currently I'm using a VF900, but it's by far the loudest component in my box. I'd love to use an Accelero S2, but who knows when that's coming out (if ever)? For now I'd settle for something not so loud... anything quieter out there?

I think you guys missed the part where I only have one slot free below the card. (Otherwise I'd definitely consider a fan swap, as I happen to have some extra Nexus fans lying around...) I did try turning the fan off, and the temp shot up over 80C!
derekchinese: Where did you hear about the release date for the S2? The last I heard, they said it would be released by end of March, which obviously didn't happen...

Well, that's why you're supposed to SWAP it, i.e. take the old one off and put another 80mm fan in there, like thiscrispyfish wrote:I think you guys missed the part where I only have one slot free below the card. Look closely at those pics -- when you swap the fan on a VF900, the new fan extends farther out than the stock fan... it ends up taking another slot. See here and here.floffe wrote:Well, that's why you're supposed to SWAP it, i.e. take the old one off and put another 80mm fan in there, like thiscrispyfish wrote:I think you guys missed the part where I only have one slot free below the card. I had a Zalman cooler on my X800 card.....it was noisy and took up the adjacent pci slot. This DIY mod keeps the card much cooler, cools a HD at the same time, and does not use up an extra slot. Can't beat it......too bad you cannot go out and just buy one. I suspect such a heatsink arrangement could be used on many GPUs.......never seen another one though.
Hi, how are the temps of your 7600. If they're good then maybe you can just slow the VF-900 fan down some more. I have a factory fitted one on X1950pro and I use ATI Tool to reduce the fan speed to "9%", the lowest it will go apart from 0%. Keeps the idle temp ~55C and is very quiet, quieter than average 3.5" HDD. I think ATI tool can work with some NVidia cards, if you're running the VF-900 with a fanmate is it turned right down? You can add a second fanmate in series to allow even lower fan speeds too.
Good luck, Seb
