Upgrade Asus EN7600GS to Gigabyte 8600GT

I'm looking to upgrade my graphics as my card struggles with the resolution on my Dell 21" WS. I want a passively cooled card and I have a bit more of an interest in games than I did when I first built my system, so game performance is a factor...

I know the Gigabyte 8600GTS is abit higher spec but I'm not sure how they compare.

The 8600GTS is decent, bot not great for gaming on a 21" WS, especially if you turn AA & AF on.
If you can spend a little more, you should consider a 8800gts 320MB, then add a Thermalright HR3 Plus with a silent (1200rpm or lower) 92mm fan.
It should be virtually inaudible and give you twice the performance of a 8600GTS.
If your case already has good ventilation AND you don't overclock the GPU, I bet the HR3 Plus could be ran fanless without any problem.

In the end, everything depends on how much you can spend... and how much performance you want to trade for silence.

"A bit more"?! That's double the cost of the card plus the cost of the cooler...you can't call that a bit.

I've been playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R. on my current system with high detail settings and it runs fine in all but the most hectic environments. Even a 10% boost over my old card would be enough for me. I don't honestly expect to be able to play the latest games at the highest settings on gear orinetated towards silence.

Nah, a 320MB 8800GTS is like, $60 more. Worth it, too. Quieter than you'd ever expect, and perfect for 1680x1050.

They are right with the performance of 8600GT. It is barely better any better than 7600gt. I personally am going for a 7900gs and throwing on an HR 03 onto it. In Canada, 7900gs with hr 03 is roughly $20 more than gigabyte 8600gt and is a more powerful and more silent option.

I have heard that the silentpipe on the 8600gt is not great, the card gets extremely hot! Around 90C from what I have heard.

Is that the 256 version? And, excuse a fool, but would that be with an additional fan?

D'oh!!!

Just bought my Gigabyte 8600GTS silent... I have a 24" Wide screen @ 1920x1200 and it struggles in my games

eBay here I come - sell my brand new 8600 and move onto the 8800 I guess. D'oh!

I hope you don't think I am thread crapping, but I also have a 7600GS and I have a question about what is messing up the screen presentation in movies. In movies if there is action the screen resolution smears. That is the best I can describe it. Also in the credits, or titles, there is a waviness around the letters. There is a general lack of resolution, but I am referring to watching movies that someone else has uploaded to the web and perhaps that has something to do with their system. Do I need a better card, monitor or what?

Have now read good things about the Asus EN7800 GT. Clocked as a good performer...but then the 7900gs is pretty rated by Tom's hardware. The TR HR3 is compatoble with that then?

Those are the combined results of bad 3:2 pulldown detection and motion-adaptive noise reduction, and unfortunately, it's a hardware limitation of the 7-series video cards. You can indeed get a better card, but I'd wait it out for the HD 2000 cards to knock down the price of NVIDIA 8-series cards, which are better.

Still, X1000 ATI cards (with Avivo) do seem to me to play SD content better than 8-series cards, and they're getting pretty damn cheap.

7800GT would be a terrible choice. It's hotter and performs worse than 7900GT/7950GT.

Also, while I absolutely love the motherboards from Asus, I don't have anything good to say about their graphic cards. They are extremely overpriced most of the time.

That is one thing I am impressed with... motion on "LiveTV" in media center is not blurred... I had always assumed this was because of my LCD screen... but now I see it is the graphics card.
