8800 GTS vs. HD 2900 pro
I am looking replacement for my 7900gs Sli system. I want to upgrade faster single card system
I could get some 8800 GTS cards ( 320 mb GDDR3 320 bit ) from 279 to 309 €'s while HD 2900pro ( 512mb GDDR3 512bit ) is 250 to 290 €'s
So when looking price and memory HD2900 pro seems to be a winner but in real time tests? Opinions, suggestions?

Oh, I just read about finnish site that 8800 GTS will be replaced by 8800 GT And nVidia G92 chipset would be released in end of november. early december..
Ati HD 2950 pro should be released October / November, which would make good candidate ^^
Too bad I don't know when Ati RV670 will be released or not even its specs.
So much choices, so little money

You might want to check out this article from Tom's Hardware. Apparently they like the HD 2900Pro more than the 320mb 8800gts. With some mild overclocking, it can perform identically to the 2900xt. However, they're also convinced that the card won't be around for long.thejamppa wrote:I am looking replacement for my 7900gs Sli system. I want to upgrade faster single card system

As for heat and power usage, I have no idea which one is better, which could end up turning the tables.[/url]
If you can afford to wait a bit (until Nov 19th), I think the ATI HD 2950PRO might be worth it.

It's basically a HD 2900XT with scaled down memory bus, some new tweaks (Direct X 10.1), and most importantly, a significantly reduced size (on 55nm process instead of 80nm of the current generation).
My only concern is that this *might* be a 256mb card which I hope it isn't the case.
Anyway, I'm waiting for the card myself.

Prototype board with RV670XT markings, that was leaked by several vendors sported a TDP of 132 Watts, and had GPU clocked all the way to 825 MHz, with GDDR4 memory working at 1.2 GHz (2.4 GT/s), while RV670 Pro prototype came with GPU clocked at 750 MHz, and GDDR3 memory was working at 900 MHz (1.8 GT/s). This board has TDP of around 104W.
Looks nice... But knowing ATI, the cooling will be horrible, and 104W isn't something you can easily silence.

I'm on the same boat as you (chosing between 8800GTS and HD2900PRO) and although I would love to buy the HD2900PRO and have the XT performance at a fraction of the cost, on the other hand it has a higher power consumption, operating temperature and a NOISY cooler.
But unlike you I can't really afford to wait that far, I have to sell my current rig and it's now or never :/ sucks...

On a (much) brighter side, 104w is much better than the 200+w the HD 2900XT drinks up.Matija wrote:http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/ ... ks-defined

Pictures of some MSI test cards show that the RV670 256mb card is actually single-slot!
According to DigiTimes (which I trust), RV670 comes with 256 or 512mb (yay!) versions, so I'm definitely waiting for it.
And exactly what is wrong with that?Matija wrote:Yeah, single-slot, all those 104W getting trapped inside the case
With a good case, moving "all those 104w" could be done much more silently. There's nothing worse than a dual-slot jet engine card that can single handedly kill all of your silencing efforts.
"All those 104W" for comparable HD2900XT performance. I'd say "finally"!
