Passive cooler for 7900GT 512MB?

Post by fingers » Tue Feb 26, 2008 1:22 am

Hi Guys,

I am looking for a passive cooler for my 7900GT 512MB as my stock cooler makes a slight whining noise that is driving me nutts

The card usually stays below 50C with the stock cooler as I rarely play any games, the system is used mainly as a media center.

The catch is that in needs to fit in my Antec NSK2480 case so can not exceed the height of the card by more than a few mm (heatpipes exceed this)!

Are there any coolers that fit the bill? A quiet fan cooler would be ok if that's my only option.

Thank you in advance.

I have a 7900gs with an Zalman VF700 on it. The 7900gs is OCed to 590 so heat output should be comparable. The zalman has a terrible fan but passable at 5V Cools the card well enough.

You can try a fan swap if you have the time. With good airflow, Zalman the VNF 100 or Mascool should also do the job just fine.

Hi there.

I would slap an Accelero S1 on the thing if it can fit in your case.

Thermalright HR-03 works fine, I have one on my 7950GT 512MB with no problems whatsoever.

BeQuiet! Polar Freezer or AeroCool VM-102 would also work.

But Accelero S1 would be best for sure.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the replies, unfortunately I can't fit the Thermalright HR-03 or the S1 in my NSK2480, I only have about 2mm clearance at the top of the card!

The VF700 also seems to be to tall but the VF900 may be an option however the most promising looks to be the Masscool VF1 which is small enough, but will it cool the 7900GT ??

Tightly spaced fins on that one. Haven't seen it before, but it looks like you might need a fan on that.

Reading up it seems the VF1 needs a fair amount of airflow, which that side of the card in my case will not have!

The BeQuiet! Polar Freezer looks good though I can't find much about it or anywhere to buy in the UK!

Still looking .... :?
