9600GT can't read rpm?

Post by line » Tue Mar 11, 2008 1:46 pm

I saw this on Expreview and was wondering if anyone knows more about it.

[quote]According to Rivatuner’s writer Unwinder, 9600GT’s fan speed can not be read in RPM, because while NVIDIA designing the 9600GT PCB they did not add a sensor chip which is “able to digitize pulses from the fan’s tachometer pinâ€

In my experience the 9600GT cooler is very loud, not helped by it running at 100% from boot. This could be fixed in NiBiTor. You'd be so much better off replacing the heatsink and fan that I don't think an RPM heading of the standard cooler really matters or not. I've replaced it with an Accelero S2 which is in the path of a 120mm case fan running ~820rpm. S1 (preferably rev2) would be better if you can get hold of one.
