All I want is a quiet gpu but

Post by toddreg » Fri Jan 02, 2009 10:34 am

after hours of researching it seems as though a decent card (for a non-gaming I7 build) that is quiet and doesn't heat up to a nuclear level does not exist. I will be doing video editing and need HDMI outputs I should mention. Any help here, seems there are major draw backs to all quiet cards.

Is there a preferred video card out there?

Thanks up front!

Is the Radeon 4550 good enough for video editing? http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/ ... d4550.html

Just about any modern card can run passive with an Accelero S1/2. Unless you get a card with a lot of coil whine, it'll be nearly silent. My 9600GT with an S1 stays nice and cool too.

If all yopu need it for is feeding your monitor then any PCIE card with the right output will do. I dont know about prices in the US, but in the UK the 4550 is still pretty hard to get hold of and much more expensive than its worth. The HD3450 costs even less and would be still more than enough for your needs. However, since youve brought a i7 system im guessing your not on a super tight budget, so saving $10 might not be worth it.

I put a 3450 in my PC when I first put it together. Despite what reviews and benchmarks would have you believe, I thought the 3d performance of the card was pretty damn good.

I lent the card to a friend while he was building a new PC. He benchmarked it in 3dmark and was disappointed when it scored lower than his AGP 7600GT, but in games the performance was much better than the 7600GT.

This is the card I had/have. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814102724

In short, if you are looking for a recommendation, this is one. :-)

You need to put the link itself inside the first url bracket and the text you want visible should be between the two bracketed urls (just highlight it before clicking on the URL button). Like this [ url=www.xyz.com ]This part will be visible[ /url ], but without the spaces.

I have one of the Asus fanless 3450's in my P45 system and it is great. Video out, can play older games no problem. The card was okay at 50C, but I added a side fan to help protect my SCSI controller from radiant heat and the GPU now runs at 40C.
