Old, slow, LOW-powered PCIe video card?

They make noise, too.

Old, slow, LOW-powered PCIe video card?

Post by valnar » Tue Dec 15, 2009 1:16 pm

I need something for a server. It has to support Windows 2003 Server.

Any recommendations? I fully expect to visit eBay for this purchase.
Thanks.

Why ebay? Hit up Newegg for an ATI HD4350 or Nvidia 8400 GS. In fact, there's an Asus HD4350 for 35 bucks shipped, 20 if you mess with the rebate. You can't do much better at that or any price.

Alright, I bought a Radeon 4350. To my surprise, no Radeon supports Windows 2003 officially! There are XP drivers, but I can't get them to work. Googling proves that few have made the minimal drivers work, but not CCC.

So back this goes.

So once again, does anyone know of a PCIe video card, either 1x or 16x, that has the lowest power draw possible and works with Windows 2003?

I'd love to use something like an old S3 PCI video card, but unfortunately I need every one of my PCI slots. It's the PCIe slots I don't need.

What about the recent nVidia G210 boards? I don't remember the exact power draw, but I thought it was around 20 watts. Here's a fanless version at NewEgg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814127454.

The 4350 looked perfect because I want something less than 10 watts at idle. 5 watts would be great. It doesn't need to do anything except show 2D video.

What about the Matrox Millenium G550 which is available in a PCI-E x1 version?
Unfortunately seem to be quite expensive (especially for such an old architecture) but otherwise it would seem to fit your requirements.

Hmm, how about something like the NVIDIA GeForce 6200TC? It's fairly low power and a quick check shows that the NVIDIA ForceWare 195.62 drivers should work for Windows Server 2003 64-bit.

According to this, I should try the 8400GS next.
