Anyone else looking forward to a 6970?

I'm looking forward to getting a new video card. I've managed to skip a generation before my next video card purchase.

I am a little concerned about the lenghth as I had to buy a new case for someone as the 5870 eyefinity they bought was 11.5" long. Hopefully they'll figure a way to make them a wee bit shorter.

The other thing I'm a little concerned about is the cooling solution. When I got my 4870 a while back I was lucky as there were several that had good silenced coolers already installed. No muss, no fuss. The 5870 I just installed for someone was pretty dang loud with the stock cooler.

If it is like 170 watts on draw max, I will be excited in a good way. I can accelero S1 rev2 and dual 120mm the puppy.

I have no idea about the watts - my guess it will be under 200 watts on max draw. It is a single GPU - I believe the 6990 will be the dual GPU unit.

The last time I bothered to look these were the expected numbers, There is a wikipedia article that has this info if you don't want to dig it up from individual sources.

While I'm sure there are serious modders here looking to change out the loud default fans on the new card, I'd be thrilled if companies like msi and gigabyte have some nice heat pipe solutions already in the works so I don't have to change it out myself. I have no issue with changing out the intel CPU coolers, I've had some bad luck with the memory and other video card mods I've performed myself.

I was just looking at the 580 GTX only because I use xilisoft to convert videos and it takes advantage of the CUDA for nVidia cards. Unfortunately all the nVidia 580 cards I saw didn't have a display port out and come with the default cooler. While the new nVidia cooler is quieter than their old stock cooler it is still too loud compared to a nice heat pipe solution with a good quiet fan(s).

I kind of like the custom cooler in the picture above - but I'm open to more custom coolers. I do agree, I'd really like them to offer them from day one as I'd much rather put on a CPU cooler than a GPU cooler - too many issues with memory and the like for GPU coolers.

Considering I just bought a 6850, not from a personal standpoint. But I gladly await the battle to the death between nvidia and amd from a practical viewpoint. Also the 6970 is way above my power threshold. I'm addicted to low power, but fast systems

I've been flip flopping back and forth on the 580 and the yet to be released 6970 - hard to make a decision with out official specs and benchmarks. I do however hope ATI is better than some guesses posted on the web say it is. The 580 uses way too much power. I have a 600Watt power supply and think I'll have to get at least a 750 if I decide to get the 580. Any word on when nVidia will be making newer GPUs with a less power hungry design?

Power draw (specified) is above my liking, which was expected, so I won't get one.
Hopefully, by the time Elder Scrolls V Skyrim is released, the process shrink will allow the same performance at lower draw.

Yep - performance is OK but certainly nothing like what I'd hoped however the price I expected to pay for a card I thought was going to be more impressive was about $150 more. Since it isn't an impressive card, the price seems OK. I am also disappointed with the power draw on it. They definitely didn't bring their A game, seems more like they just modified the 5870 with a little more of this and a little less of that. I'm not saying the card sucks by any means but the 5870 was a significant improvement over the 4870 but I figured I'd hold out for the 6870 (now it would be the 6970) a year or so and just skip a generation - looks like there wasn't much point in waiting - unless I wait for nVidias next card as I can't imagine their next card is going to have numbers that aren't as good as the 580. Seriously though, AMD, WTF? Is this going to be what we get now that the name has changed from ATI to AMD - just a scramble of the chip without any real improvement and some drawbacks in other areas? It's almost like they are plagiarizing their own work and hope no one noticed they handed in the same paper on Huckleberry Finn they did last year, just moving the paragraphs around in a different order.

It looks like the big issue with the 6970 is kind of fermi syndrone. The original GTX 480 was fast, but also very power hungry and with a lot of features not for gaming. This is kind of how the 5870 evolved into the 6970. I think bang for the buck-wise, the 6850 and 6870 are much better choices. The 6950 and 6970 feel disappointing imho, obviously we need 28nm for some really serious gains.

Since it isn't an impressive card, the price seems OK.

Performance-wise and price-wise the AMD 6970 seems to be nip and tuck with the nVidia GTX 570, with a similar power draw and load temperatures. I would say that both the AMD 6970 and GTX 570 are impressive, given the level of performance they offer for the price. But the 6970 is clearly not a competitor to the GTX 580, which is why for at least some potential buyers it is a disappointment.
