saving power: locking nvidia gpus' clock to low 2d desktop

Post by amonani » Fri Feb 11, 2011 12:36 pm

has anyone here tried to force their nvidia gpu to only use the p12 state?

i've been using nvidia inspector to lock the speed of my card during startup. furmark load temp never reach 40C (room temp is 30).

p12's stock voltage is 0.875 volts but i am not contented because i know it can run as low as 0.825 volts . i can't change the gpu's p12 state voltage without using bios editing tools.

is there a big difference between 0.875 volts and 0.825 volts in terms of power consumption?

Difference in core power will be 12.5% at the greatest, enough other components operating means overall power difference will be much less on a percentage basis.

Nothing to be even slightly concerned about.

You can do the same thing in rivatuner if you enable the enableperflevelforcing setting. It can actually force the card to run in only 2d only mode. I did this for a while as I am not a regular gamer.

However the program has not been updated since 2009, am not sure how well it works with newer Nvidia cards.
