They make noise, too.

Quietening a GTX460 with an HR-03 Plus

Post by qiqi1021 » Thu Feb 17, 2011 2:35 am

Hi.

The loudest part in my PC is the graphics card and last weekend I got around to finally quieten the damned thing. So I dusted of an old HR-03 Plus I had lying around and made a custom bracket to mount it to my GTX460.

All marked out, you can see the dimensions in the pic for anyone else who might want to try this.

After some cutting, drilling (3mm bit), filing and deburring with some 360 grit:

While I busy with the tools I also cut a heatsink for the VRMs. Simply chopped up an XBox360 GPU heatsink, which is a very handy spare part to chop up for RAM and VRM sinks by the way - 15mm tall so it fits perfectly under Zalman VF1000s. :D

Here you can see how it's mounted.

Do you think it's enough mounting pressure?

Components used:
4x Rubber washers from HR-03 package
4x M3 x 20mm bolts from Zalman CNPS9700 LGA775 mounts
4x Springs from Zalman VF1000 mounts
4x M3 mobo standoffs
The rubber washers helped to stop the bolts from slipping when I screwed the standoffs on.

Results:
Disappointing frankly. I tried a combination of fans - 120mm Zalman F3, 92mm NMB-MAT (Chinaflow :| ) L1BX and a 120mm ADDA AD1212LB-A71GL. In 25C ambients they hit 83C, 86C, and 84C respectively in OCCT, compared to the 73C with the stock Cyclone cooler. :(

BUT then I took the HR-03 off and found...

Yup, the HR-03's base is concave. I've never noticed it as I previously had it mounted on a G92 8800GTS (also had to drill some new holes in the stock bracket).

Now to lap it. Stay tuned.

Spent a few hours last night lapping the HR-03 and I'm very pleased with the result. With an ADDA AD1212LB-A71GL @ 9V (~1350rpm?): 72C running OCCT in 31C ambients (very hot summer weather today), aka 41C delta compared to 58C before lapping and 48C with stock Cyclone cooler. :D

The base is completely flat now as opposed to the concave shape before:

TIM spreads well now and impossible to remove the cooler without a lot of twisting:
