Stainless Water Cooled Case (Pics)

Post by |aM|Redneck » Sat Jun 26, 2004 8:22 pm

Well here is my first shot at water cooling. Although my PC is a Mobile 2600 it is running somewhat warm and the TT fan on my SLK-800 is noisy. I am trying to build this as a standalone cooler and I hope it will do the trick from me. I am running 200x10 right now with system temp at 28c and CPU temps at 41c. The CPU will run at 200x12.5 but it gets to 48c to 50c. I want to get it down and make it quiet. Here are the specs and pics.

New C-System Pump (ordered 2 days ago)
Swiftech 6002-A (as soon as they come in)
86 Chevette Heater core
Stainless case and radiator
Evercool Aluminum 120mm fan @ 80 CFM - 30db

All tied in with one cable tied to my PC with a Molex connector.

I hope this will work fine.

looks awesome so far! well done, and welcome to SPCR!

judging by the pics alone you're pretty familiar with metal work. only one thing - with a box that big, is it necessary to have the fan shroud extended out from the box? couldn't it be managed internally? (although i've yet to see what you're going to put in it)

Great job!
I think the handle is a great touch :)

I really liked it how you sealed the pump with an extra layer of metal too.

May I suggest using an Evercool Aluminium fan blowing on the heatercore to match the look of the case?

i think he already is :)

something that just occurred to me.. what happens if you wake up one day and decide you don't like the look of aluminium anymore? you'd be in a bit of a tight spot there i'd imagine...

The metal is Stainless and I like the look very well. I dont think I will dislike for sometime. The pump is not installed as of yet. I am getting the C-Systems CPS750 pump, it will set in the area in front of the radiator. The Evercool will mount to the back of the shroud on the top pic. So it will be drawing air from the box thru the stainless grill on the front. I think I will have 1 1/2 '' from the radiator to the fan.

I am going to sandblast the case to give it a rough texture look.

I like the dull finish better.

Added the radiator tonight. Just waiting on my pump now.

The sandblasting definately gave it "the look", very industrial, I like it.

The shroud for the fan is a good idea for better airflow through the core and noise reduction.

What did you use to sandblast it?

It could have been a lot better. Some ideas:

-Make a larger reservour
-if you can, fit the pump inside the reservour (less noise)
-That's a really small heater core... I'm sure a bigger one fits and
performs much better
-Increase the contact area of the reservour with the enclosure (to help cool the water)

And perhaps keep the tubing ~5/8" ID inside the unit (or whatever the ID is for the heatercore).

I think it's pretty nice as it is though. I'm really temped to get a smaller case and stack it on top of such an external unit now. Thanks for the inspiration |aM|Redneck! :)
