Reserator Pump Failure

Post by Denorios » Sat Jan 29, 2005 4:54 pm

I've heard many things about the unreliability of the Reserator pump, but this is rediculous. I set up my brand new reserator, and after 2 minutes of operation, the pump got louder and louder, and then simply stopped. No amount of switch flicking will get it to restart. And yes, I have checked the fuse. Has anybody else experienced such early spontaneous failure?

Secondly, should I RMA the whole thing, and get another one, or buy a new pump? Given that they only appear to cost about£8, I am wondering whether going through the trouble or RMA-ing it is worthwhile.

On a side note, I am currently writing this with my CPU being cooled solely by the Reserator waterblock and a couple of case fans - massively underclocked/undervolted obviously, but it's doing a fairly creditable job at the moment. I wonder how much heat the block can dissapate on its own?

That's the shortest time before failure I've ever read about. Given their track record, I think you'd be better off replacing the stock pump with a different model. The Eheim 1048 is a popular choice, though I'm considering using a 1250 in the future with my Reserator.

Zalman has shipped replacement pumps to people who have had failures, so you wouldn't have to RMA the whole thing. I'd give them a call.

EDIT: I've started a poll in the Consumer Feedback forum about this: Zalman Reserator User Feedback. Denorios, please be sure to add your experience to the thread.

I would consider it DOA.

You could give the warranty a try anyway. If they don't want to play, just purchase either another Eheim 300 or use an external pump like a more reliable Eheim 1048 or Laing DDC. Keep in mind that those pumps will not be as quiet as the stock pump unless you isolate them.
