cheap conroe system, (is the boxed conroe noisy?)

Post by kapetanski » Thu Oct 26, 2006 1:37 pm

Here is my planned system spec, a system mainly intended for audio production.

motherboard: asus P5LD2-VM DH/C (micro atx, but I think it will fit the p150)
memory: ddr2 dual channel ddr667 kingston 2x512 MB DDR2
cpu: e6300 1.86 GHz
hd: western digital wd2500ks
chassie: antec p150
dvd: pioneer dvr-111d

My question is then, is it necessary to change the original conroe fan, or is it quiet enough?

I've read about the incompatibilites with the NeoHE 430 PSU as well, is it safe to use with the asus p5LD2 now?

I also need advice on a suitable firewire controller, preferably with a texas instruments chip, which is hard to find it seems.

cheers

I found the retail heatsink fan for my E6600 to be unacceptably loud and inefficient at keeping the CPU cool. By far the loudest component before I took it out.

Newer Antec NeoHE PSUs no longer have incompatibilities with Asus motherboards.

Since you're worried about cost, you might consider a simple Zalman CNPS 7000B-AlCu or Scythe Katana. They're only about $30 and should be much quieter than the stock cooler. Arctic Cooling has some cheaper yet fairly quiet CPU coolers, but I'm not sure if they have a cheap one that's compatible with LGA775.

The stock cooler is quiet at idle but annoying at full load. On an E6300 at stock clock and voltage (fan set to "silent" in the BIOS), you would only notice it when running something heavy duty (transcoding a video or benchmarking).

I'd suggest trying it to see if you find it tolerable. If you decide to replace it, there are plenty of inexpensive aftermarket coolers, as mentioned above.

i'd agree with the above - namely the stock cooler is quiet at idle - i have an e6400 and an x6800. it makes a hell of a racket with load though (more so on the x6800)

...

I replaced the stock cooler on my e6400 with an ultra 120 with a papst fan which doesn't go above 1000rpm even on load - though that heatsink is probably overkill... (temp hit a max of 55C on full load for 3 days - batch encode of 10,000 flac to m4a files in case you were wondering)

gonna do the x6800 at some point too

ok, thanx, I'll try the stock fan and see if it's annoying or not. Looks like the p150 is ok also, my plan B was to get an antec solo with a zalman psu.

If I buy a pci express card like ati x1600xt or so, how much power do I need do you think? Is 360 W enough? And if I do some overclocking but with the default voltage, will it change the power need as well? Let's say I go from 1.86 to 2.4 GHz. (Suppose I'll need better heatsink then as well)

Freezer 7 pro if I recall is LGA 775, good value too.
