Build own external PSU?

Post by RagnarDarude » Sat May 29, 2010 1:19 pm

Im considering building a system based on the Silverstone Sugo SG02 case. One downside of the case is that you cant put a big cpu-cooler in it cause the PSU is directly over the CPU. One solution i just thought of is to have the PSU outside of the case. The computer will be in a book-shelf, and the Sugo is one of the few cases that will fit and still have room for a full-size graphics card. Inside the shelf i could easily hide the PSU behind something like books and whatnot. I could probaly build some kind of casing for the psu but im lazy so i probably wont. Anyone have experience on this? Any thoughts?

If you choose one of the really modular standard ATX12V PSUs that has long output cables, you can probably just place in somewhere on your shelf and run cables into the case through the back. Do some careful cable management and remember not to move the computer around much.

What about the Seasonic X-650? How long are the cables for that PSU? Its not modular but would it work?

Yes, they are, totally. Every output cable is detachable. See our review - http://www.silentpcreview.com/Seasonic_X650 -- cable length detailed.

You could even use extension cables, should the stock cables not be long enough!

Thanks for the quick replies! Any thoughts on casing of the psu? Is it ok to just place it beside the computer, only with enough room for the fan to suck air into it? I might use a carryover PATA/IDE drive, is the power connectors the same as SATA?

No, older drives use a Molex connector (standard on all PS's).

Leave room for both intake & exhaust -- make sure it blows away from the pc. The sata and pata connectors are not the same but both types are included.
