Advice on a new system

Post by Vampirtc » Sat Mar 19, 2011 8:01 am

Hi, I use my computer for web design, programming, Photoshop and mostly run virtual OS or two. I barely play games, but I might play Rift. The computer is on 24/7. The most important part is that it needs to be reliable, quiet and fast (in that order).

Old components that I would like to keep but will replace if need be:
Lian Li PC-B20 case (I like the design), http://xsreviews.co.uk/2011/02/lian-li-pc-b20/
WD VelociRaptor 300GB SATA HDD WD3000HLFS (as a secondary drive)
Sapphire HD 5750 Vapor-X 1GB Video (good enough but loud)

I've been thinking about:
Intel Core i5-2500K, 4x 3.30GHz, boxed
ASUS P8P67 Pro Rev 3.0, P67 (B3) (dual PC3-10667U DDR3)
Kingston ValueRAM DIMM Kit 12GB PC3-10667U CL9 (DDR3-1333)
Gelid Tranquillo (Sockel 754/939/940/AM2/AM2+/AM3/775/1155/1156/1366)
OCZ Vertex 3 120GB, 2.5", SATA 6Gb/s (VTX3-25SAT3-120G)
Nexus NX-5000
old: Lian Li PC-B20 case
old: WD VelociRaptor 300GB SATA HDD WD3000HLFS
old: Sapphire HD 5750 Vapor-X 1GB Video with Accelero L2 Pro upgrade

My first question is, does the motherboard have the "Sandy bug" fixed?
Does 12GB RAM work ok (3x4GB), or is it better 4x4GB? Is there a point in using faster RAM for my usage?
Are those components and cooling going to work with Lian Li PC-B20 case?
What would you recommend for cooling Sapphire 5750? I've been thinking about Accelero L2 Pro.
Is there a better option as Gelid Tranquillo?
What can I do to keep WD VelociRaptor 300GB quiet?
Nexus NX-5000 is a bit hard to get in EU, alternatives?

Yes, that's what the Rev 3.0/B3 designation means.

1. You should stik with 4x4GB. 4x4GB is slightly faster than 3xGB as it is running under dual channel mode.
2. To make VelociRaptor quiet - elastic suspension is a must for decoupling HDD vibrations from case cage.

Thanks for replies so far.

I have totally changed my preferences, this is what I got:
Intel Core i5-2500K, 4x 3.30GHz, boxed (BX80623I52500K)
Gigabyte GA-H67A-UD3H-B3, H67 (B3) (dual PC3-10667U DDR3)
be quiet! Dark Rock Advanced C1 (Sockel 775/1155/1156/1366/754/939/940/AM2/AM2+/AM3) (BK014)
Seasonic X-Series Fanless X-460FL 460W ATX 2.3 (SS-460FL) (passiv)
Scythe Slip Stream 120x120x25mm, 800rpm, 68.2m³/h, 10.7dB(A) (SY1225SL12L)
OCZ Vertex 3 120GB, 2.5", SATA 6Gb/s (VTX3-25SAT3-120G)
Kingston ValueRAM DIMM Kit 16GB PC3-10667U CL9 (DDR3-1333) (KVR1333D3N9K3/12G)

I'll keep my old graphic card if I feel like playing games. I wish you could have a real GC connected but power it on when you need it.

I'm not sure about:
1. Sandy integrated graphics, drivers stability and picture quality. I have two displays connected, one with DisplayPort at 2560x1440 and the other with HDMI at 1080p.
2. Since most components are passive what fans would you recommend and where would you put them? http://xsreviews.co.uk/2011/02/lian-li-pc-b20/
3. Couldn't find any reviews for Gigabyte GA-H67A-UD3H-B3, H67. But this is the only ATX motherboard that supports DisplayPort and HDMI.
The safe way would be to go with ASUS P8P67 Pro Rev 3.0, P67 and PowerColor Radeon HD 5750 Go! Green

What do you think?

1. you should be able to do this. i make no promises about performance though.
2.120mm in the front; and consider a semi passive psu, just in case heat pools up top in your case.
3.there are 2 micro atx boards that have dp&hdmi; but yeah, the safe bet is the 5750.

other than that, i thought the spcr review liked the vr... maybe not you model? i dont remember the review really though.

if you do go with the passive video card, you might want to play with the airflow with regards to the pci slot covers.

Just a thought, but am I right in thinking that you can't overclock a K series chip on a H67 board? You would need a P67 (as you previously selected) or don't bother with a K series chip if you don't want to over clock

go with the fractal case, I have my pc in one and it's quiet.
You mentioned that your VaporX is loud... I have the same GPU and have sucesfully turned the fan down to negligible through the ATI app that sits in the taskbar.
