Questions about dual xeons

Post by kogi » Wed Dec 29, 2004 6:12 pm

Just picked up a dual xeon, The stock wind tunnels are freakishly loud.
2.8 512cache 533 bus

Should I just replace the fans with some panaflos?
What would be a safe max load temp?
Best availiable HSF for these babies?

TIA

The stock windtunnel / heatsink is actually pretty efficient. The cheapest quick mod you can do is replace the 60 mm fans with quieter ones.

P4 xeons slow down at a certain temp (70c?) and shut down at a higher temp (90c?) to prevent damage. I'm sure it's possible but I've never heard of anyone damaging a P4 Xeon from overheating.

Swiftech MCX-603V + Nexus 80 mm fans is a probably the quietest you can get. Expect CPU temperatures to run at ~ 38C idle. Load temps can probably reach 70C. This solution will probably cost at least 120 USD before shipping.
