Recommendation for a Socket A heatsink + fan

Post by HarvesterOfBeer » Wed Nov 09, 2005 2:07 am

I've got a mobo (Albatron KX800something) that does not work with the Zalman 7000/7700. The board is running a Athlon XP 2400+, and will be going in a Sonata case. Other suggestions for a not-breaking-the-bank quiet CPU cooler? Possibly something off of the SPCR Lab Clearance list?

Thanks!

First, Welcome to SPCR!!!

Out of SPCR clearance list, the SLK900U looks like a good candidate for you, though you'll need to get your own quiet fan. Otherwise read this thread on similar discussion. :)

Thermalright SI-97 heatsink + Nexus 92mm fan at 5v and run your Barton at 166x11 @ 1.35 volts.

Ok, thanks for the tips and the welcome!

Badger: I'll have to look at the over/underclocking options on that mobo...I'm not sure I can adjust things that way.

I run the Thermalright SI-97 with a Nexus 92mm, and just be warned. This heatink is a COMPLETE AND TOTAL P.I.T.A. to put on. Seriously. Be aware of this. In the SLK3000B, you have to pull the power supply to put the HS on at all. But you can't remove the PSU completely without removing the HSF.

To seat the heatsink totally correctly, with a layer of thin thermal grease, you have to pull your entire motherboard out of the case. It also can rotate slightly while installed, which probably isn't ideal for maintaining a perfect layer of thermal paste between the CPU die and the HS.

Ok, good to know, Telix. I went ahead and ordered the SLK900U with a Nexus. I'm going to give that a shot.
