CPU temp 10 deg lower than sys temp...is this meas. right???

Post by ChiBOY83 » Wed Nov 09, 2005 12:59 pm

Ok, so my system temp is 33, and my CPU is 23..these are idle temps w/ the cpu on c 'n c.

amd 3000, xp120 w/ nexus 120
nexus 120 intake and exhaust
passive gigabyte 6600gt
s-12 430
ABIT AN8-SLI
antec 3000b

..even under load my CPU temps are usually a few degrees lower than the system temp....

What are you using to report temps? Seems likely that whatever program is switching the two values or mis-reporting one of them. Or it could just be that your motherboard greatly mis-reports CPU temp.

i am using abits software.... Abit EQ..i went on the boards there and i didn't see anythingh aboiut a major temp discrepency such as this w/the board or the software

I seriously doubt that you have a CPU temperature of just 23 degrees. Even with quite effective air cooling, you will be at least 10C above room temperature. Unless you have a very cold room for your computer along with a "hot spot" around the system temp diode, I would guess your CPU-diode is giving you the wrong signal.

Abit seem to have troubles with their sensors.

current temps
cpu 26
sys 36
pwm 37

system is clocked down to 1,000 by cool n quiet.... the room isn't currently cold..its prob err, maybe upper (edit, somewhere in 70's..i can't really tell...hehe)

My Abit board reports 33°c too (20°c ambient), I corroborated with a temp probe and the temperature measurement
is 32°c at the chipset heat sink, so the air cooling the CPU is a lot cooler, with cool and quiet and a very efficient heat sink
it is possible to have a CPU a few degrees cooler than the board chipset. Mine idles at 28/29 with a Zalman CNPS7000-C
fan swaped for a 80mm at 1100rpm.

To determine which of your temps is the CPU temp. Start CPUburn or some other CPU loading software. The temp that climbs fastest is the CPU temp. This is easiest to see with something that can show your temps in a graph (e.g. SpeedFan) For a more thorough explanation: Calibrate Your CPU Temp Reporting.

It very well possible your CPU is cooler than the other components, especially with your cooling setup, which is serious overkill for that CPU.

-------------------

For all the disbelievers in this thread: An Athlon64 3000+ IDLING and cooled by an XP-120 and Cool'n'Quiet enabled is usually exactly the same temp as the case ambient. In a well ventilated case with the computer IDLING case ambient doesn't need to be more than a few degrees over room ambient (certainly not 10°C).

well..i ran CPU burn and it seemed clear that the CPU measurement is actually for the CPU....running it, hte temp immedietly jumped 10 degrees, and after 2 minutes it was up 13, and the PWM jumped 3 and the system temp stayed the same.... so i spose the sensors are at least monitoring the right thing...

CPU 25 ---> 38 (2 minutes)
SYS 35 ---> 35 (2 minutes)
PWM 35 ---> 38 (2 minutes)

as far as calibrating the temps....well, um, im not guna go thru all that, too much readng and retstarting of the computer etc. :lol: :lol: :lol: ........

Probably a badly calibrated temp sensor. I would guess its about 10ºC too low. Lots of board manufacturers have this problem. Even my ASUS A8V-E seems slightly off and my MSI RS480M2 (which has been known to over report temps) ranks in about 15-20ºC higher than it should.

I used a temp probe from the case and touched the side of the heatspreader under the Zalman HSF. Not that accurate, but I got a reading of 32ºC (~5ºC above ambient) while the temp in the BIOS read 56ºC. I assumed that the center of the heatspreader was probably 5ºC higher, so its over reporting by at least 15ºC if not more.

I get the same affect w/ my AMD system when running cool and quiet. If I take a fan and point it at the power dist. components of the MB, the system temp will go way down. I always assumed this was generally the result of having a fairly low case air flow and nothing to worry about.

I get the same result as other...my CPU runs cooler than my chipset with CnQ enabled. With CnQ I run about 26/28ºC (cpu/chipset) and without I get 28/28ºC and thats with my CPU overclocked 300Mhz to 2.5Ghz. Those temperature are with the ambient of 22º but I've seen my CPU run below the system on idle without CnQ with lower ambients a few times.
