AthlonX2 3800+ & 3200+ silent builds - suggestions pls?

Post by anthonysimilion » Mon Mar 20, 2006 11:05 pm

Hi everyone,

I'm about to purchase parts for two computers, with low noise in mind.

Here's the first:

CPU
AMD Athlon64 'VENICE' 3200+ CPU Socket 939

Motherboard
Abit KN8-SLI Motherboard (has a heatpipe on it)

Hard Drive
Samsung SpinPoint P120 200GB Serial ATA II Hard Drive

RAM
OCZ Premier PC3200 1GB Kit (2 x 512Mb) 1024Mb Dual Channel

Optical Drive
LG 4167B Dual Layer 16X Black Dual Kit; DVDRAM, DVDRW w/ Nero SW

Case
Antec 3000B

Power Supply
Seasonic S12 430W

Fan 1
Nexus Real Silent 120mm Case Fan

Heatsink
Scythe Ninja Plus Cooler SCNJ-1000P

Video Card
Gigabyte NVIDIA GeForce 6600GT 128MB SILENT PCI-Express with SilentPipe II

----

And here are the specifications for the second machine:

CPU
AMD Athlon 64 3800 Dual Core X2 64 Bit DC CPU Socket 939 Boxed w/ HS & Fan

Motherboard
ASUS A8N-SLI PREMIUM S939/PCIe/SND

Hard Drive
Samsung SpinPoint P120 200GB Serial ATA II Hard Drive

RAM
OCZ Premier PC3200 1GB Kit (2 x 512Mb) 1024Mb Dual Channel

Optical Drive
LG 4167B Dual Layer 16X Black Dual Kit; DVDRAM, DVDRW w/ Nero SW

Case
Antec P150

Power Supply
NeoHE 430 (included with P150)

Fan 1
Nexus Real Silent 92mm Case Fan

Heatsink
Scythe Ninja Plus Cooler SCNJ-1000P

Video Card
ATI X800GTO2 16X PCI-E 256Mb 256bit DDR3 VO DVI 12/16 Pipes

Video Card Heatsink
Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer ATI 5, Rev2

---

What do you think? Any suggestions?

How is the fan with the Scythe Ninja? Do I need the additional Nexus 120mm to replace it, or is it very quiet already?

I haven't installed a VGA Silencer before - is it easy? I've successfully installed a Zalman 7000B on a Pentium 4 with Ceramique before.

Thank you in advance. :)

in regards to your second build; the mother board and video card will work together, but it will be a waste of money to buy an sli motherboard and use a radeon video card.

I'm not really interested in SLI, but chose the A8N-SLI Premium for its good features and passive cooling. SLI will never be used.

Is there another non-SLI passive Athlon 64 939 motherboard with similar features I should consider?

What do you think of the specifications? Is it good for low noise? :)

The second system is very similar to my rig, so obviously the components are well selected ;) The only thing I would change is to get 2GB of RAM if you can afford it. I'd say that it's better with 2GB of value RAM than 1GB of expensive OCZ stuff. Are you going to overclock?

Is there any special reason for not going with the P150 for the first rig as well?

You might want to take a look at the Asus A8R32-MVP Deluxe. It has all the same features as an A8N32, but is compatible with ATi Crossfire.
