Remote Control for powering on/off pc...

Post by computergeek22 » Sun Dec 24, 2006 11:43 pm

My reason is that I have my computer in the closet. As it is in the closet, prior to getting a g15 for christmas, I was using my ps2 keyboard to start my computer. I was thinking of using my ps2 mouse but since it is a laser mouse, the slightest touch starts up my computer. Sometimes if I bump my desk by mistake my computer starts. What other alternatives do I have? Are there any remote controls for starting/ closing your computer? What brands should I look at and where are they readily available? Also what functions of my g15 would i lose by going ps2 instead of usb?

btw for compatibility issues etc here are my system specs:

Windows Xp Home
a8r32mvp

I guess that's the only important stuff so I will leave out the cpu etc...

I have no idea what running off of PS/2 vs. USB would do; I suspect it's not much ... but who knows, latency could easily be affected (it affects mice that way).

If I were you, I'd poke around in BIOS and see if there's an option to have a mouse click activate the system rather than just movement.

The other option would be to leave your original keyboard plugged into the PS/2 port and use it solely as a (rather inelegant) remote button.

The iMon 2.4G DT remote with PCI card by Soundgraph uses RF (no need for line-of-sight like infra-red), and will power your PC on/off, but it might be overkill for your needs.

You don't say where you are, so I can't tell you how much it will cost you locally, but it's around 70GBP in the UK.

You could replace the stock power button with a momentary button and long leads. Or even splice in, leaving 2 switches in parallel.

Option two is to configure the BIOS to turn on after power failure and use a switched power strip.

Wow lots of replies. Believe me devonavar I went through the bios back and forth. Sadly my asus mobo only supports PS2 mouse/keyboard support. Right now I've put a keyboard under my desk to start my computer on and off but it kinda takes away legroom. I didn't think of the power on option. How would I do that by having a switch?

also how exactly would it power on the computer through pci. I'm not at home right now but I'm going to go check my bios if it has a power on function by pci device...

iMon Remote

It's pretty expensive as nick705 said.

How about one of these: http://www.balta.pl/katalog/img/16771_1129464717_0.jpg with a USB -> PS2 converter. I have one myself and it's a great remote. Only ~$20 too. With the iMon I think you're paying a lot for the software as well, which you probably won't get much use out of if you're only going to use the remote to turn the unit on.

The easiest solution to your problem:

Buy some cord and a push button from a hardware store, costs you just a couple cents. Then just extend the power on/off button from the front of your case to underside your desk or sth like that.

Cheap, easy and it just works.
