need advice guys...

Post by omega_1 » Thu Dec 28, 2006 5:28 pm

alright, so I have about 500$ to spend @ newegg, and 160 @ Best Buy coz I have store credit...so I was thinking of getting an nks4400 and a sata hdd from there...and then use my current 7600gs and buy the rest @ newegg...Ram/Mobo/cpu and dvdrw. I was thinking going Amd route with a 65w x3800/ ASUS M2N-E/ 2gb ddr2 800 , now is ddr2 800 necessary ? can I still oc with ddr 667 ? whats stock fsb*multi on the x2 ? initially I was gonna go c2d, but then saw the price difference and its over 100$ cheaper to go amd, and I'm on a tight budget, anyhow lemme know your thoughts, and last question, how good and quiet is stock am2 cooling ? I'm only gonna oc to around 2.4-2.5ghz...I'm not expecting miracles, but iirc my 939 3200+ the stock cooler using my mobo to thermally controll it was actually good and quiet, the 70mm fan ran @ less than 2k rpm, and kept my cpu cool even oced @ 2.6ghz...

you could afford a e6300 $180and gigabyte 965-ds3 $130, $100 for a gig of ram and still have money left for a burner. Plus the 6300 will stomp the crap out of any AMD cpu currently out.

Well a good dvd-rw is only like $30. I have been using NEC drives. The gigabyte board I picked only because it is known for good overclocks and is only like 120-130. That leaves about 150+ for ram. If I was you I would go sell some blood, sperm, or just hook yourself out for another 40 bucks so you have the money to get the ram and then your set.
Unfortunately 2 gigs of decent ram is running about 180+ right now. But seriously man, beg 40 bucks off someone. Or sleep with 8 fat chicks for $5 bucks a piece. Or 2 really fat chicks for $20 a piece. :D (family guy quote)

ok, and is it the general consensus that the ds3 is the best board for my money ? with a price limit upto 130$ for the mobo ? does the biostar suck ? anything from asus I should get ?

edit : also off of newegg should I be looking for ddr 667 or 800 ?I need something with a lil room for oc, so Id rther not get 533 coz that would run pretty much stock with the cpu...right?

Here is a page that talks about the best cheaper memory for 965 chipset.
Im sure there may be better boards out there for the money. Maybe someone else has suggestions, I dont own this board, or a Core2Duo, but when I can afford one that is the most likely the one ill get.

ok, scrtch that 500$...let say 700$, coz im gonna go back to work in a week, so already settled :

e6300
gigabyte s3
coolermaster centurion 5
transcend 2*1gb ddr 667 (from that link seems like they can do over 400fsb easy)

now that leaves me w/ 450 for the ram, psu...I was thinking something like cheapest ddr 800 that does 4-4-4-12, and silverstone 500w psu (105$ any other recomendations? would like to keep psu under 100$ )....but you guys tell me...and with my 160$ store credit id get a nice 16mb cache hdd and a sata dvdrw @ best buy...

edit : added ram I'm getting...now its down to psu....what shoul I get under 100$ that wont limit my oc ?

I really think 2GB RAM is overrated even for people who think they need it. Run good low memory AV (Kaspersky), manually run your scans, stop unnecessary tray icons, kill services you don't need, etc. You're better off with 1GB low latency DDR800 RAM IMO. 8)
