According to this review (in German, sorry) the Asus EN7600GS TOP Silent runs coolest (48 idle, 63 load).

The Gainward Bliss 7600GT SilentFX GS @ 575/1.400 has the highest overclocking potential (for what it's worth...).

The Asus EN7600GS TOP Silent is called overall winner when it comes to price/performance as well as lowest power consumer and best heat dissipator.

I've been looking into this too. The Gigabyte silentpipe II 7600GT seems to offer the best/coolest performance although some report it to run fairly hot. I don't know where the truth is. It may have a lot to do with case air flow, fans, etc.

I'm also trying to find out if there's any conflict with a passively cooled GPU and the Asus P5B-E mobo. (and or clearance issues with a tower cooler).

You asked me this in that other thread, but I'll answer here. I'm pretty sure the Gigabyte 7600GT will fit on the Asus P5B-E because it fits on the Biostar 965PT with a little room to spare. Comparing pictures of the two mobos, it looks like they have exactly the same amount of space between the PCIe-x16 slot and the NB heatsink. As for a large CPU cooler, Thermalright says their Ultra-120 cooler will work on any Socket T mobo. I know the Scythe Infinity fits as well, because Anandtech used it in their test setup.

Edit: Searched around in the CPU cooling forum for p5b info. Apparently, the Scythe Ninja will not fit (without using a hacksaw and cutting part of it off anyway), so it looks like the Ultra-120 is the way to go.

Thanks Jackylman.

Looks like I need to compare the Ultra-120 and the Noctua.

Edit: add the Tuniq Tower 120 as a contender too.

Darn... I have been overcome by analysis paralysis!

I have two of the Gigabyte Silent Pipe II 7600GTs, and highly recommend them. The only downside is the lack of HDCP.

Thanks StanF and nightmorph for the SPII 7600gt reports. What mobo are you using?

My current eVGA6600gt idles at 53*C. With fan.

I'd like to beat that performance/temp with a fanless card if possible. I'm still out as to whether or not I want to give up that extra PCI slot.

I'm planning to use the Asus P5B-E and think the SPII 7600GT will overlap one of the PCI slots.

Hi nightmorph

Could you tell me/us how you cool your system? These values are just unbelievable... As you know, I've got pretty much the same system as you (I finally managed to buy the parts and put them together). On my setup with a X2 3800+ EE, a Gigabyte 7600GT SilentPipe-II, an Antec Solo, a Noctua NF-S12-800 (on 5V) and a Arctic Cooling Freezer64 Pro (at ~5V as well) (without a front 92mm fan) I get the following values:

idle
CPU: 37°C
GPU: 53°C

load (2X Prime95 & RTHDRIBL under WinXP)
CPU: 55°C
GPU: 75°C

These values are measured with SpeedFan (CPU) and the nVidia tool (GPU).

Thanks!

Hey, they ain't so unbelievable. Even nVidia's utility reports the same temps I'm seeing in other sensors.
It's not that I don't trust you. These values are just quite a bit off from what I see in my system... :?
nightmorph wrote: I'm running an Antec Solo, an Athlon64 X2 4600+ w/Scythe Ninja less than a millimeter away from the top Gigabyte heatsink. (The two heatsinks would be touching, except that I stuck a plastic cable tie in between to separate them; that flat space is all that prevents direct heatflow.)

I'm using four fans: 1x Nexus 120mm on the Ninja, 1x Nexus 120mm on the exhaust, and 2x 92mm Nexus on the front intakes to cool my hard drives. Note that even when I dial down the 120mm Nexus fans to ~5V, my GPU temps remain the same.
Well, that might explain at least part of the mystery, since I'm only using two fans at the moment. I'll try a front 92mm fan at 5V to see whether that makes a huge difference.
nightmorph wrote: The card is the hottest thing in my system by far, but it's not too bad at all. Maybe I just got a really good sample, or I've found the holy grail of airflow? My sensors aren't in question; cross-checking with other sensors in the case (with different software; everything is Linux-based) shows they all agree.

What software are you using under Linux? I tried lm-sensors but only got the CPU and system temperature and fan speed. Not even any voltages. Is there any tool for the GPU temperature available?
nightmorph wrote: I did do a pretty good job with cable management, and since the Gigabyte is the only card on the 'board, things are even better.

Cable management is another issue in my case (pun intended...). So far, it's quite a mess...

Thanks for all you help!

Resurrecting this old thread.. I have all my components but haven't had a chance to start the build yet.

I'm semi-considering returning my Gigabyte 7600GT SPII for an XFX 7950GT passive VGA.

I'm sure the performance is overkill for my modest needs. Are there any fitment problems with the XFX passive 7950GT and the P5B-E mobo? Does it take out two slots too... like the Gigabyte 7600GT SPII?

Not sure I really want to spend another $110 plus shipping for the card exchange... but I have another week to RMA my 7600GT and get the 7950GT.

Sigh... the upgrade thinking just never ends...
