Sound card power consumption - Xonar or X-Fi Prelude

Post by nicke2323 » Fri Sep 07, 2007 11:18 am

Posting here under system advice because I couldn't find a better sub-forum for audio ...

I'm considering getting one of these new high-end sound cards, either the Asus Xonar or the Auzentech X-Fi Prelude. Can someone tell me approximately how much additional power these would draw from my system, compared to on-board audio? Has anyone measured using a kill-a-watt? Results for other cards, e.g. ordinary Creative X-Fi cards, would also be interesting. Thanks!

I've just entered "sound card power consumption" in Google, and got this very thread as the result. It was indexed 48 minutes ago. Wow. Is SPCR being closely monitored by Google?!

Anyway, the second search result was this thread :)

Maybe it'll help you a bit.

what exactly do you need the card for? if it's just optical out, like I needed, the Sonidgo Callisto USB c-media sound card could be worth looking into. it does dolbly digital live, and DTS interactive encoding, and it works in Vista 32/64. It's USB, so it can't use more 1-2 watts if that.
