My quiet build-to-be...

Post by majicjack_11 » Sun Mar 23, 2008 6:42 am

Here are the (potential) specs of the quiet system I want to build:

CPU:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 Processor BX80557E6750 - 2.66GHz, 4MB Cache, 1333MHz FSB

Motherboard:

Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R

RAM:
Patriot Extreme Performance DDR2 Dual Channel 4GB (2 x 2GB) PC2-6400(800MHz) CL 4-4-4-12 Low Latency DIMM Kit (PDC24G6400LLK )

DVD-RW:
LITEON LH-20A1L(Black) SATA LightScribe 20X DVD-Writer

Case:

Antec P182 Advanced Super Mid Tower Case- Gun Metal Black

PSU:

Corsair HX Series CMPSU-620HX SILENT 620W ATX Triple Power Supply 120MM Fan 12V 50A Continuous 24PIN ATX Modular

CPU Cooler:
Scythe Andy Samurai Master

Video Card:

EVGA GeForce 8800 GTS Video Card - 512MB GDDR3

Hard Drive:
Existing 500 Gb Seagate SATA

What do you think? Will it be quiet? I presume the fan that comes with the Andy is PWM capable? Will it fit in my case with my mobo?

I wanted the Ninja, but unfortunately it is not available to me locally. All they had was the Andy but from the review here it seemed to be quiet.

Also note that I will not be OC'ing the CPU in the near future.

Thanks!!!

i can almost hear the disputes now, but i'd suggest getting Gigabytes GA-EP35-DS3R. BEFORE you tell me that the power savings is minimal, look at the ~$20-30 difference in price for the motherboard.

tell me that's not reason enough and you're crazy!

Thanks for the suggestion! However, I have to get these parts locally, and the store does not carry that model

Thanks again

Well, I am going to try to be short as possible.

1: One again... your PSU is an overkill. If you truly want a quiet rig go look for 425Pro82+ or Modu82+. 425W should be more than enough. You can go to SPCR's basis, and of course 625W Modu82+ review, for more details.
2: HSF: I would advice/recommand a Noctua HSF because you really have a fair bargain with a good HS and a truly silent fan. Moreover you have extra adapters (LNA-900rpm, ULNA-600rpm) so PWM is not really matter. You really have the bang for your monies with this HSF. But it shouldn't be easy to get one in the US. You can check out the last article on AnandTech for more details.
3: HDD: you really need to go read SPCR's recommended HDDs if you truly want a quiet rig once again.
4: VGA HSF: well, you have only 2 choice: Accelero S1? I'm not sure about the compatibility with a GTS; or a HR-03.

Good luck.

EDIT: S1 Rev.2 compatibility with a GTS512 is not a issue at all.

8) just wasn't aware of that, my bad.

about the Andy Samurai though, i don't think its PWM.

Image
The fan speed is constant at 1200rpm, providing 49.58CFM airflow at a noise of 20.94dBA.
no PWM.

on the flip side, you could get a PWM 120mm fan to use on the heatsink without a problem.

or you might try looking for an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro. 92mm fan, PWM control, and its been reviewed here: http://www.silentpcreview.com/article285-page1.html

About CPU - I'd recommend E8200 or better E8400 (if the latest is available).

It's a very good build with some little changes...
1. First of all, A Scythe Ninja will be much better than Samurai for your system...
2. You can take Corsair HX 520 instead 620.
3. For youur VGA get Accelero S1 Rev2. You can let it fanless or with an low RPM fan.

Same as above, E8400 instead of E6750
As for cooler u have many choices : - Xigmatek HDT-S1283 / Scythe NINJA PLUS / Tuniq Tower 120
And i would suggest to change also your case fans with some Nexus 120 / Scyte S-Flex / Noctua
Powersuply i think 620 is way too much :)

Thanks everyone for the input!

I have changed the PSU to a Corsair 520HX. I have found an Accelero S1 nearby, but I do not believe it is a Rev2. Will it still work?

As for the CPU, I will look into finding a Ninja, and researching the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro.

Thanks!

i think the Accelero S1 Rev 1 is better than the second one, more heatpipes, it should still work as well.

Depends on the VC, some of the newer PCIe 2.0 I believe will require Rev 2
New system (under construction):
P182 case, Xeon 3320, Thermalright HR-01, ASUS P45 P5Q Deluxe, Corsair HX620, Evga 8800GTS 512, Fans ??, WD 6400AAKS,

Ok good news, I found an Accelero S1 Rev 2. Also, this place sells the Noctua NH-U12F and the Ninja Rev B.

This is a dumb question, but will the Ninja run at 12V constant if plugged into the motherboard since the fans do not have pwm functionality? Sorry for the dumb question.

Basically, will Speedfan for example allow me to control my Scythe Ninja with 3pin connected to the motherboard CPU FAN slot?

Thanks!

Some motherboards have other fan control than PWM-control. Like asus boards have Q-fan. Which functions even regular 3-pin fan.
