new gaming pc for someone with OCD on noise level.
should i build or buy? im looking for a normal pc, but it must have an nvidia 9800 x2 or gtx. i need the pc to be as quiet as a laptop or perhaps not audible at all. should i build it? or buy a prebuilt specialty silent pc? i know how to build a pc but i never tried liquid cooling or anything like that.

I really doubt that EndPCnoise does any real modding to their prebuilt systems. I think it's more about special selection of parts. But then again, I notice they like to use Zalman heatsinks, which are good but don't score as high as comparable Arctic Cooling, Thermalright, or Scythe products according to SPCR's tests. I would build it yourself, but coming up with some after market cooling for those cards would prove difficult as their still quite new. I have no idea if the 9800GTX uses the same PCB as the 512mb 8800GTS, so I'm not sure if you can use the same aftermarket cooler.

You just answered your own question.lethallottery wrote:thats way overpriced.
Why not? EPCN builds them. Many people here build them.would it be possible to build that?
Well, there's an ugly but efficient method to do this.
Open case on its side - passive CPU heatsink.
Passive video card - same setup.
No other cards on the board - built in everything else.
Flash drive or similar.
Passive power supply, not in the case.
The thing will radiate heat like a large stereo amplifier, so three feet of clear airspace above it is a must. Expect it to run hot but within normal limits. If you can stand one fan, a 140m or larger suspended above it to help blow air upwards would help greatly.
edit - I've seen 250mm fans, even. Set on slow, this would more than suffice I bet and be under 15db.
