Big tower for 6-8 HDD's and big geforce and silent, exist?

Post by bramdo » Tue Jun 24, 2008 2:35 am

Hi,

I have a silverstone tj10 but I will give it to my daughter because she starts to use pc's at school
I need a case that can hold 6 drives (eventually 9) and not in a way that cable management is a fuss (like antec p190).
The silverstone was excellent in this regard but the downside was the noise. Any recommandations, lian li p80 seems to be silent and big?
Thanks,
Bram

If you can hold fire on buying a new case for a while I can give you some serious help with info on the Antec 1200.

I have just noticed that you are running 3 x 2 HDD's in RAID 0......... is that correct.??? Do you like your data.???

Hi,

Thanks for the quick reply and i do have one month time.
I'm using a a raid o voor my system, backup completely on another raid 0 and than I have an external disk (firewire as an additional backup).
I'm doing video edits etc so the extra performance is nice and besides that I'm not very familiar with raid 5 (or different) rebuilds.
Is the antec coming soon because i haven't seen it?

1200 is already sold in the States, so it should be getting really fast in the Europe...

Weird, it's been available in Poland for a while. Maybe just the store(s) you tried don't have it?

You'd need to replace the fans, which is standard procedure for all Antec cases. Even then, I doubt the mesh at the front of the Antec 1200 will do much to dampen hard disk noise...

Hi guys,

Indeed, i found the 1200. It's a bit astonishing that this is a quiet case due to all the fans and openings but i already had a P180, P182 and an antec sonate when i build setups for friends and these are rather quiet.
I have some noctua fans here so replacing them is no issue.

Arent' there however cases that are silently built (lian li has some damped cases with fan controls etc?)

Thanks
Bram

unless the case is built like a concrete bunker with 1m thick walls, with 9 HDDs silent is not even an option. the case is not the problem (or the solution) it's the number of hard drives.

I am going to be suspending all 12 of my HDD bays (currently 6 are occupied), and I am going to be replacing the 3 tri-cools with 3x Nexus fans soon.

As Jaganth points out the HDD's will be the largest source of noise in the machine, and I can confirm that the largest source of noise currently is the vibration induced noise caused by the HDD's (this isnt actually that bad, as the mounting is very sturdy, but it is still far from ideal).

The fans are also a bit noisy on low, not helped by the facts that they are mounted directly onto steel, the Nexus fans will of course be soft mounted.

How's cable management with those HDDs?

Also, any chance of some detailed pictures?

Hi,

I know the hdd's are a noise factor although in the silverstone tj10 it's more the light allumnium that does the part.
My wife finds the design rather important though and therefore lian li and silverstone are some favourites but you guys don't seem to recommend them?

The price is not a big issue since i need these for work

I have a load of pictures and plan on doing a nice write up when I have the new fans and the drives are suspended.

I will need somewhere to host my pictures, what websites are recomended, I can set up an account and give you a sneak preview.

imageshack.us is pretty reliable and offers ready thumbnail codes for forums.

You can use my image hosting site as well, Kwikpiks - see the sig for the link. Hotlinking of images is fully allowed, and thumbnail and BBCode generation is available as well.

Sorry Nick, too late.

What do you think of that beast of a case.?

I will post loads of pics in a new post once I have silenced the server, its been up and running perfectly for 2-3 weeks now, and apart from the annoying noise the only problem is that speedfan does not pick up the HDD temps from the motherboard or from the RAID card. This is a moot point as they will be very cool indeed, but when I swap over to 3x Nexus fans @5v I want a comparison, and of course the actual temps.

The case looks pretty beastly. I'd like to see what the whole setup is like after you're done with it.

I ordered another right-side panel for my Antec 900, since I can't stand windows. I'm sure that you could probably do something similar, or just call Antec and say that your current side panel is broken. They'll probably send you a new one for free.

Speedfan does a pretty poor job with picking up hard drive temperature sensors, unless the drives are straight up SATA or IDE (no RAID controllers here). I'm able to read all my hard drive temps using Everest though (except those behind the Intel RAID controller - nothing can access those).

OK, I found out the drive temps of my 3x 1TB Samsungs via the RAID card utility.

80F, 78F, 78F, which translates to 25C - 27C

That is seriously cool with the tri-cools on low, even when suspended and with much slower fans those drives are going to stay at good temps.

The windowed side doesnt bother me as that side will be against a wall under a desk.

My WD10EACS drives are packed in 4-in-3 modules, with 500RPM slipstreams blowing over each set of 4. My hard drives typically sit at about 32C... which I consider to be very good considering the cooling setup. :)

i'm a big fan of the chenbro sr107...really solid steel chassis....just dump the screamer fans included and replace with your own...

nice and roomy 8 hotswap drives as standard (and more if you cannibalise the 5.25 drive bays on top)
