Need help to cool my rig

Post by _MarcoM_ » Wed Jul 02, 2008 2:25 pm

Hello m8s, i need suggestions to cool my rig with the right fan(s):

- case Antec P150
- mobo Gigabyte GA-965p-DS4
- cpu c2d 6400@stock with Zalman CNPS 8000@1400rpm
- ram 2x1GB corsair@533MHz
- PSU zalman ZM600
- GPU Sapphire 3850 256MB with stock fan
- storage Samsung HD501LJ
- DVD writer Samsung (don't remember the model writemastersomething...)

All parts are at default clock and voltage, nothing was modified.
Everest report these temps with a rear Scythe 120mm@800rpm:

mobo 44 °C (111 °F)
cpu 40 °C (104 °F)
cpu 1 / core 1 48 °C (118 °F)
cpu 1 / core 2 48 °C (118 °F)
GPU 52 °C (126 °F)
SAMSUNG HD501LJ 36 °C (97 °F)

Antec P150 is a lovely case, but i think my temps are too high, isn't it? In your opinion how many fan i need? One rear, one rear and one in front, or what? What kind of fan, and how many rpm? I can buy noctua here, if it is necessary

Considering where you live those temps are pretty damned good (depending on what part of Italy, and your current ambient temps.

Italy this time of year averages several (~5C) degrees higher than London, my system spec is in my Sig, my temps are below. Remeber that practically everything in our systems are different when looking at the temps.

NOTE: Someone closed the only window and door in the room that my PC and server are in, both have been on for several hours, its damned warm in here - my core temps yesterday at this kind of time were ~2C cooler.

Speedfan:

Temp 1: 43C
Temp2: 29C
HDD0: 36C
Core0: 34C
Core1: 34C
GPU: 44C

Only that Italians know how to insulate their houses. Brits seems to build houses with the wrong concept in mind - they should be cool in summer and warm in winter, not vice versa.

Do you distincly hear the HS fan?
What's your load temperatures like?

I dont hear it unless I get really close, but sat at my desk with the PC just infront of my feet my PC is totally silent in the dead of night. Its so quiet that I have turned it off by accident a few times when I forgot it was already on.

Load temps are pretty good, the HDD goes up ~2C, the GPU doesnt hit 70C, and the CPU's are below 65C (its been a while since I last tested them - that number is more of a guestimate than actual).

Hello Marco,

Those temps are fine! They are on the cool side, really...

yeh the temps seem fine, you might be able to cool the MB and keep the gpu temps stable with an intake fan, another 800 scythe would be fine without adding to the noise output.

You could really do with replacing your CPU heatsink and getting an accelero S1 for your graphics card, you could make quite a large impression with the noise whilst possibly even improving the temps (but certainly not making them worse).

I have just started running ATI Tool, with nothing but a bit of web browsing hitting the CPU's (which are at an overall average of %50 - 20-40% to Core-0, and 60-80% to Core-1).

This is as much to find out how hot the GPU makes the CPU with the CPU only running at 50% load as it is to find out my overall temps. Many people feel that the GPU alters their CPU temps dramatically - it does, I am not denying that, but what about my PC with its 65W GPU.

Update with temps after coming soon.

Idle

Temp 1: 41C
Temp2: 29C
HDD0: 31C
Core0: 32C
Core1: 32C
GPU: 41C

After 5 minutes.

Temp 1: 42C
Temp2: 38C
HDD0: 32C
Core0: 42C
Core1: 41C
GPU: 65C

And then the PC hangs (for the second time), the GPU after 8 minutes was up to 67C and everything else had settled, the GPU was obviously beginning to settle down.

The system hanging is obviously due to a bug within ATI Tool, as I have not had any trouble with any 3D games after hours of usage - maybe a heatsink has fallen of of one of the Graphics Cards memory chips, I will get around to looking at that over the weekend if I have no further problems whilst playing games.

More later when I have some more testing time.
