New Computer for Girlfriend

Post by Kavok » Mon Jul 14, 2008 6:55 am

Hi all, putting together a computer for my girlfriend.

Heaviest app she will be running is Adobe CS3. It's going to be a bedroom PC so preferably quiet and a microATX case.

Here is what I have so far:

Thoughts?

Hello & welcome to SPCR,

The one item that jumps out at me is the Earthwatts PSU. You could easily use something like the Fortron Source Green 300watt unit:

Now, with the Mini P180, this unit might have cables that are too short. So maybe the Enermax Pro82 385watt unit? Or, the P150 case (or whatever the white version of the Solo is called)?

Is this the PSU you were referring to? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817194032

Do you think the stock cooler will be adequate / quiet enough?

You may want to look at the Antec NSK3480. It is not as pretty as the new white cases so your girl friend may not like it as much. It is smaller and has a good power supply included (not as good as the Pro82 recomended by Neil though). You could take the money saved and upgrade the case fans and cpu cooler to something quieter than stock. The 120mm Scythe Slipstream fans are great for case and CPU fans. Hope my rambeling has helped.

Its pretty cheep compared to the other one.

i chose an AMD setup for my GF but she's not into PS:

AMD Athlon64 X2 4850e+ 45W w/ Scythe Ninja+ Rev. B fanless
Gigabyte MA78GM-S2H
2x1Gb Corsair DDR2-800 5-5-5-18
Seagate 250Gb 16Mb SATA2
Antec EA380W
Antec NSK3480
1x120mm Scythe M 850rpm out

now sorting out things, my take on your config:
CPU cooler: Scythe Ninja+ Rev. B fanless
hdd: Samsung 320Gb 16Mb SATA2 ( HD321KJ )
case: Antec NSK3480 ( but drop the included EarthWatts 380W, not that it's not enough for the system but it's noise level it's just one point below the Corsair, but the woosh sound can be heard from 1meter away, it's not that bad but not worty of a silent tag )
PSU: Corsair VX450W
case fan: 1x120mm Scythe M out ( from the Ninja )

now, the CPU cooler could easily be replaced with a Thermalright HR-01 Plus or a Xigmatek HDT-S1283 and the case with an Antec NSK4400 ( so you don't pa extra for a PSU that you don't use; the NSK4400 it's only one bay higher that the NSK3480 ), also do replace the included Antec 120mm fan with a Nexus 120mm or a Scythe 800rpm
