More popular than ever, but some are still very noisy.

i'm getting a compaq v2000z. i'll know when i get it, but i fear the fan might be too loud for class and library. do you guys replace your notebook fans ever?

I haven't but I've been contemplating it. I have a gateway 3018GZ. The unfortunate thing is finding a fan that would fit. And especially one that would be more quiet. Plus, it's a rather thin laptop meaning that airflow is rather restrictive. So a fan swap could mean not enough airflow to keep it cool. It's a sticky situation.

On my Dell 8100 I can control the operation of the 2 fans. If this is possible on the Compaq, a strategy may be to force the fan on low at startup and see if it can maintain a low enough temperature. Try to avoid playing Doom while in class.
