ThinkPad Silent Owl Blade Fan for Santa Rosa: -3dB noise

Not sure if this belongs in Notebook Systems or Fans...

Just ran across thisarticle describing a novel (?) approach for lowering fan noise. The operating concept is to create a notch in the airflow, similar to what silences an owl's wings. Supposedly, this lowered the noise of the notebook fan by 3dB.

Has anyone seen something like this before? USPTO.gov patent search returns no US Lenovo IP with the keyword owl. Could be interesting applied to desktop/GPU cooler design...

I've heard of making the fan blade have little cutouts to simulate an owl's wing, but nothing like the implementation Lenovo came out with
