Mini ITX mobo/CPU combo w/HDMI?

Post by ezryder » Thu Mar 12, 2009 6:57 pm

I've been searching around on Newegg for what seems to not exist - a Mini ITX motherboard and CPU combo that also has integrated HDMI output, that's also quiet.

Does such a thing exist?

Ultimately, I'd like to pull off what the new Eee Box does (that's yet unreleased, but has HDMI output in a super small form factor).

Thanks!

This looks pretty good. Add a PCI TV-tuner, a nice hardrive and a slimline blu-ray drive and you got a winner.

I've been browsing for Mini-ITX boards for a long time and that is the exact one I'm looking at. To answer the original poster's question, YES you can combine that motherboard with a CPU and save around $20-25 depending on your choice of CPU.

Click the above link to open the JetWay JNC81-LF motherboard product info page, and under the "Combo and Essentials" tab (it's in the left column, a bit further down), click Combo Deals (view all).

My CPU of choice is the AMD Athlon X2 4850e 2.5GHz or AMD Athlon 64 X2 5050e 2.6GHz. Both are low-power-draw CPUs at 45W. It can play HD content without breaking a sweat, especially with hardware acceleration from the motherboard's on-board video.

I'm deciding between two RAMs: My AMD 2.45Ghz desktop PC with 1GB ram and no hardware video acceleration was able to display top-quality 720p HD video with perfect smoothness. No stutter/shudder at any point. Installing the proper video playback software is important, but that's not hard to do on a HTPC. Thus, 1 GB RAM may be sufficient (8.99 USD for one Rendition 1GB stick, free shipping).. but it's cheap so why not have 2GB? I'll probably use my HTPC for light gaming.

After you've made your post with URLs in them, you can proceed to deleting the "Post 2" and Post 3".. it won't affect your original post with URLs. It's a little too late now as apparently you can only delete your post if it's the last one in the thread :p

I'll remember that next time I register up for this board. :-P

About the RAM, I see no reason to go with either more or less than 2 gigs. Money-wise its the sweet spot. Performance wise, 1 gig is most probably enough but in some instances 2 gigs help. I would go with 2x1 now so I wouldn't have to "worry" about upgrading in the future.

Tell us how your build goes. What OS are you planning on installing?

On that JetWay JNC81-LF AM2+/AM2 that you linked to...the reviews there on newegg suggest that
1) The heat sink included isnt the best, yet may not be easy to replace
2) the fan included is loud

This may raise questions if the objective is to build a quiet unit, as stated in the post that started the thread.

There is also a Zotac nVidia 8200 based ITX motherboard. It has a DVI out, but comes with an HDMI adapter (and can transmit audio over the DVI/HDMI).

No fan so that's not an issue. Pair it with an energy efficient Athlon and you should be good to go.

I'm even selling a 780G mini-ITX board with HDMI (along with DVI, VGA, and just about anything else a human may want) in the Deals/Classifieds section of forums. :)

Well, I am sure it is going to be loud if you use a hot CPU. However, if you go with one of the older athlon X2's (the ones with a 45W TDP) and under volt it, its most probably not going to run particularly hot. Depending on the case you choose, you might be able to go passive cooling on the CPU as long as you got decent airflow through the case.

Also Intel DG45FC, but for motherboards with embedded CPUs you'll have to wait as nothing really good is out yet.
