New ATI chipset looks promising for silent S939 systems

Post by afrost » Fri Jul 29, 2005 9:58 am

I think this may be my next Athlon64 motherboard purchase since it is completely passive without the neat for heatpipes.

I was going to buy another Abit AN8-Ultra for myself....but now....

Yes, that board has me excited, too. :D

I like everything about the board except for its poor USB 2.0 performance, which STILL has not been corrected in this new SB450 southbridge (though ATI promises it will be fixed in the upcoming SB600).

Oh well, at least it's an improvement over the MSI RS480M2-IL. And it's a full ATX board with PCIe x1 slots. Plus, HD Audio for A64!

Nice. If they'd just come out with a micro-atx version of this board, then I'd be set!

itd be nice if it had more than TWO pci slots. jeez. that's no good for me. too bad too, looks kinda neat and different in a few good ways.

also, check out that northbridge. man, talk about a capacitor defense. no water cool on that northbridge. hm. wonder if it gets hot on load with the gfx chip disabled and all video cards firing.

Pretty in Pink.

Asus A8N-SLI Premium is nice though for nVidia fans. <also has heatpipe>

BUT Abit's counterpart is better for cooling, as the heatpipes are positioned closer to the back whereas ASUS' are blocked.

remember that it has two 1x PCIE slots though for a total of four add-on slots. how much stuff are you planning on adding :) I don't know why there aren't very many cards out there in 1x PCIE form yet.....hopefully we will start to see more soon.

The northbridge is below the CPU. In one of the pictures it doesn't have a heatsink on it....only the PWM stuff does....and in two other pictures in the review the northbridge has a passive heatsink. One of the pictures was provided by Saphire and is not the actual review unit.

I've always wondered why nobody made a board with a white PCB. I'm tempted to buy it, just for looks. I mean, I don't even have a 939 CPU, OR a PCI-E video card, but I still want this thing.

Have you seen this?
It just looks so... tempting for me to buy  (although I have no 939 CPU or PCI-E card too  )

Ack. I see pink.

Although I dig the onboard video with DVI out.

That's pretty cool, looks like custom lucite tops on Danger Den water blocks.

I heard it's gonna be a special bundle by ATI with Danger Den, since that MB is mainly for the OC enthusiast.

This may be the only A64 mobo I have seen with on board Audio good enough that I would not figure it essential to buy a soundcard. I like that there are a couple of SATA-2 connects. This does get me thinking there's an alternative to NF4,though I'd want to know the bugs are worked out-and I'm curious about the next few mobos based on this that can be even sweeter.

ditto :)
u can tell theres been 'too much' overclocker input though.. no serial/parallel ports, or pci(e) slot next to the graphics card, seems a bit 'just because u can' and wont really advantage anyone, and will disadvantage others. sure they might not always be used by everyone, but having them there does no harm afaik.

other than that, and the usb.. all seems great.

ABIT made a number of white ST6-E boards back in the days. It's pretty much a collector's item by now.
