Post by preti9cboi » Mon Sep 12, 2005 10:12 pm

I just go ta Zalman CNPS7000B-ALCu for my chaintech VNF4 and it's only spinning "sometimes". Is it suppose to do that?????

You've probably got CnQ enabled. That's a good thing! Enjoy the silence!

if it doesnt spin up when your doing intensive things like a benchmark or gaming, theres something wrong with it. otherwise its fine as long as your temps are ok

Thanks for the reply. Would anyone know if the Thermal Compound is any good? The one that came with the Zalman.

I have a Chaintech VNF4 Ultra. On very cold days, my Zalman CNPS7000B-ALCu doesn't spin, which is a good thing. On normal days, 99% of the time, it spins at around 1000 rpm.

Of course I have Cool'n'Quiet enabled. You need to check your BIOS settings. There are options that allow you to adjust temperature settings of Cool'n'Quiet. I am using the lowest temperature settings.

Just keep an eye on the CPU temp. You can either use nvMonitor, if you have an nVidia 6600GT card, or SpeedFan 4.25 to monitor the CPU temp. Normally, my CPU temp is at 30C-32C.

The Zalman thermo compound is fine. I also tried Arctic Silver Ceramic because I heard that it performs much better. Both of them are fine in my opinion. There is no major change in my CPU temp after I switched thermo compound. Maybe it is because the CPU temp is already quite low. By the way, the Zalman one is a little easier to spread.

Ignore temp3. My temp3 is at 127 too, and it stays fixed even when I just turn on my PC on a very cold day. I think there is no sensor for temp3 on Chaintech VNF4 mobos.

Click the link in my signature and go to the Video Card section at the bottom. You will see the instructions on how to configure speedfan. You have a controllable fan port on your motherboard. Take advantage of that.

You can rename the fields in SpeedFan. The screenshot below ought to help you.

Please note that there is an inconsistency between the Chaintech VNF4 board and SpeedFan on fan ID's 2&3 :

Board Lettering vs SpeedFan
* CPU Fan Fan1 = Fan1 (Controllable + speed readout)
* Fan3 Case Fan = Fan2 (Controllable + speed readout)
* Fan2 System Fan = Fan3 (Speed readout, not controlled)
* Chip Fan Fan4 = no control or readout, not connected to 8712F
