Which S754 runs cooler? Sempron 64 or A64 Newcastle 3000+

Post by mx-5 » Tue Oct 25, 2005 1:49 pm

I'm looking for a CPU for my HTPC which will be based on a Socket 754 motherboard. I have a Sempron 64 2500+ right now - didn't realize it doesn't support Cool 'n Quiet until after the purchase.

Given the choice, will a Sempron 64 3000+ (Palermo @ 90nm) be cooler, or an Athlon 64 3000+ (Newcastle @ 130nm) be cooler, both with CNQ enabled.

Thanks.

The Sempron 64 3000+ (Palermo @ 90nm) easy.

Is your current Sempron 90nm? Is so before your spend more money try undervolting your current CPU? There is a decent chance you could get down to 1.1v since its only 1.6ghz

Thanks. I figured the 90nm cpu will be cooler.

The 2500+ will likely be used in another machine, so I won't be transfering it to the HTPC. However, good thought on undervolting it - any chance I can get by with the stock heatsink passively?

Also, do you think it's better (again from a cooling/noise perspective in an HTPC role) to use a 2500+ and undervolting it, or to use a 3000+ and enabling CnQ?

Thanks.

I've got a Sempron 64 2600+ running on 1.05V. I'm cooling it with an Aerocool HT101jr heat sink with an 80mm Panaflo L1 at about 6V. Idle is 38C and load is 48C albiet in a rather cool environment. (my basement) I've never tried passive. I think it's worth a shot though.

Sempron. Same reason as why venice is cooler then san diego... Smaller cache -> lower heat output.
