p5b dlx 8 phase power chips super hot

Post by stukovx » Wed Nov 01, 2006 8:18 pm

Just installed my ultra 120 today and was feelin around for pwn temps. I touched one of the 8 phase power chips and it burned my finger on contact. I think that was the reason I was hitting a wall at 460fsb. I put some swiftech beefy ramsinks on them and I am orthos stable at 470 whereas before it would error in about 30mins.

Anyone else witness this as well?

Apparently motherboards are designed so that airflow of CPU fan would cool components around CPU socket which doesn't happen with tower heatsinks.
In open testbench phenomenon wouldn't show so easily because there's plenty of room temperature air available but inside case where air is warmer effect should be much more noticeable.
So you should direct some airflow to them for cooling them.

I thought 8-phase power mosfets were meant to run much cooler cos there's less current going through each chip?

How much have you overvolted? (And what is the stock voltage?)

My cpu is at 1.27v while nb is at the second to last highest(1.65 I believe) and south bridge is at lowest. Ram is at 2.25v

Have you tried with lower NB voltage?

Are you sure it's the MOSFETs?

On my P5W, the hot parts are the large black blocks labelled RIO, which are passive inductors. The MOSFETs are much lower profile and barely get warm; the StackCool copper layer on the back of the board is very effective.

The inductors are just pieces of wire, coiled up. There's no point in attempting to cool them, because they're good for roughly 200C or more. Unless they're hot enough to desolder themselves, they're fine.
