Intel VT or AMD-V on a budget?

Post by dougz » Sat Feb 16, 2008 3:13 pm

I fear that my knowledge of processors is very dated, so suggestions/corrections would be most welcome.

If my budget can swing it, I'd like to find an inexpensive dual core CPU that supports Intel VT or AMD-V.

If my comparison shopping is correct, Intel doesn't appear to have anything in the budget segment. I don't see anything from Intel that could touch the AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+ Brisbane 2.1GHz 2 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM2 65W Dual-Core Processor - Retail at $59.99 (Model ADO4000DDBOX) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819103774

Have I missed something? Mobo suggestions welcomed, too.

Why do I want virtualization support? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kernel-bas ... al_Machine

If you are doing virtualization, the real benefit is from the integrated memory controller in the AMD processors. The bulk of the "heavy lifting" is in memory mapping, so the higher memory throughput of an integrated controller trumps any advantage that you would probably see from either technology.

Yeah, AMD looks like the way to go. VT is not supported on the cheaper Intels.
