MB/CPU recomendation for WHS.

Post by srbliss » Fri Feb 12, 2010 11:55 am

I have 4 GB of DDR2 ram on hand now that I have downgraded my day to day PC to XP pro 32 bit. I think I want to make a little server using this ram, I have discs, power supplies, case etc. What should I use to make a low power server that will mostly be for backup and music files - I might eventually want to stream video.

Any ideas? AMD or Intel?

Something like this: Asus AT5NM10-I Atom Dual-Core D510/ Intel NM10/ A&V&GbE/ Mini-ITX Motherboard
Super low power, should take your DDR2. Intel makes a similar MB, as do others.

I had an Atom 330 for 8-mo, I was very impressed.

I'll bet you're impressed with that image. ;)

Low-power Dual core AthlonII paired with a 780G mobo and a few WD Green drives for storage.

WHS won't recognize the full amount of RAM since it's only 32-bit (you won't need it all though), but the next version of WHS will be 64-bit only.
