I've been thinking of getting this scanner. My intended uses are to scan old family photos for preservation (ie, museum level archive-quality not required) and to scan documents for records.

$50 seems like the cheapest available. Should I spend more?

If you are scanning photos and not negatives or slides, then this one should work fine.
