is the S12 430w enough power for

6 hard drives (3 sata, 3 pata)
2 optical drives
amd 3500+
sound card
radeon 9800
capture card
(will be used for some video/photo editing)

and if i were to go dual processor (opteron), would I need a server specific hard drive?

Yes.

If you go dual processor you can use whatever hard drive you like, but you'll need a power supply with an 8-pin dual CPU plug, which the S12 doesn't have.

S12-430 should have the 8-pin plug for server boards.

the s12 430 does have the necessary 8-pin EPS12 plug that you would need for a dual processor board. Frankly though, there isnt much reason to go dual processor when you can instead go dual core and pay less for the motherboard, ram, and chip, and get the same performance

You would think I would remember the PSU I've spent the last month playing with in the P180. They're right, The S12 is fine for Dual-Core.

the 430 is only slightly more expensive, has much more headroom, the 8 pin cpu connector and most importantly: it is the highest power model available with the quieter fan controller.

teknerd, is the performance of a dual core processor system really comparable to a dual processor system?

1 AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ Toledo (2.2 GHz) @ $719 (newegg)
2 AMD Opteron 246 SledgeHammer (2.2 GHz) @ $477 each (newegg)

gonna have to read up on this.
