Amp draw on the 12V line

Post by DArtagnan » Wed Sep 13, 2006 10:15 am

I am upgrading my computer to:

Core 2 Duo 6600
Asus P5B Deluxe
2 Gig DDR2 Mem
7900 gtx
1 hard drive, 2 optical drives
all in a p180 case

I have read the forums, and I know that my current, quiet, 400 Watt power supply will be enough to power it in terms of Watts, however I am wondering about the 12V line. I have seen anywhere from 22A to 32A recommended for the 12V line of the power supply for a 7900 gtx card, but then again, those same companies recommend a 500 Watt power supply, which I know I don’t need. My current power supply puts out 18A on the 12V line. What do you think, is it enough, or do I need a new power supply? Has anyone run a 7900 gtx card reliably on a power supply which only puts out 18A on the 12V line?
Thank you (This is my first post in these forums, but I have been a long time reader and fan)

18 amperes is 216 watts, which should be more than enough for a E6600 and a 7900 GTX.

The TDP of the CPU is something like 89 watts (I believe? maybe lower), and the 7900 GTX draws 84 watts under maximum load as measured by xbitlabs.

E6600's TDP is 65W so as long as you don't pile big amount of drives that PSU should be enough.
(and assuming PSU is good)
