3Y Power Technolgy ?

Post by EdT » Sun Jul 27, 2008 9:13 pm

Anyone heard or used or taken apart this brand of PSU ?

My Antec Phantom 350 failed and I was in need of a temporary PSU before I can find a Seasonic unit locally. I stopped by my local used computer joint with a 100 used PSUs thrown into the bin, I grabbed the most heavy one I could find and it was labelled 3Y Power Technology model YM-6042A 420DC Output.

Once I got it home, I did the usual thing that most would do here and opened it up (sorry no pics ...LoL !) so see why it was so heavy and to clean it up abit since this was a used PSU. The heatsinks in it are massive !, as big as those in a fanless PSU with plastic baffles on the sides to prevent the daughter boards from short circuting. The fan is a Nidec which I automatically concluded should be quiet.

After plugging everything back in, I pressed the power button and everything came to life, the 80mm Nidec fan was quiet at the start, but soon started to whine once the system got warmer. Anyways for $5 that I paid for it, it is a fine stand-by unit to have ! I might do a fan swap to a 1900rpm Pano if I have the time.

In 2004, FSP Group (Taiwan) invested in 3Y Power Technology.

So if the PSU is older than 2004 it may be different that a traditional FSP unit.

Either way the guys at http://www.jonnyguru.com/ might know more about it...
