s12-600 Buzzing

Post by Mystr_Byrnz » Mon Aug 22, 2005 2:13 pm

I'm not 100% sure, because it could be the harddrives projecting noise out the back of the case, but when I direct my ear toward the back of my P180, I can hear a distinct buzzing coming from the PSU chamber. Has anyone else experienced this type of thing or should I be concerned?

It sounds like electricity buzzing/crackling lightly, and I've verified that it isn't any cables vibrating or anything like that.

I wish I had a good mic to record this and show you, because I feel my description doesn't do the sound justice.

Why don't you disconnect the hard drives and other fans and see for sure where the sound is coming from?

Great idea! I'm so shortsighted sometimes. :)

Thanks, I'll try that.

Hope it works out. :-) And for fans you can't unplug, just stick your finger carefully in the blades or on the hub (good for testing video card and CPU fans).

I own an S12-500 and never hear any noises from it. If I place my ear directly below it, I might be able to hear a subtle woosh.

try changing the speed of your other fans, ie. CPU fan.

Now that you guys mention it, I am now experiencing an annoying whine. The problem is, I can't tell if it's coming from the power supply or my motherboard. It is a horribly high pitched whine that is very grating on the nerves to say the least. It is interesting that it only occurs when I use my USB ports in certain combinations. So, if I plug something into one USB port, the adjacent port MUST be occupied by another USB device, or otherwise I hear a whine. Also, if I plug a USB extension into one of the USB ports, I will hear a whine unless I plug a device into the extension cord. The whine will also go away if I unplug ALL of the USB devices. Weird, huh??

Unfortunately, due to its high pitch nature, I cannot localize the whine between my PSU and my motherboard.

These kind of sounds are almost impossible to localize with a computer in the case. My old motherboard ocasionaly whined, I had always thought it was the power supply but the whine remained unchaged after switching tot a totaly different power supply.

my buzzing is definately coming from the PSU. I've contacted Seasonic about it and they said I should not hear anything other than air coming through the PSU. Once I have time to do a little more isolation, I'm going to contact them again and hopefully get a replacment.

One thing he said might cause such a sound is the fan spinning at a very low spd. . .which might actually be occuring in my P180 with the bottom chamber fan.
